Blue Nile...

http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu264/peli46/BlueNile1.jpg

Solid 24 kt gold.

See now that is an example of a pen that's impressive in some ways, and possibly even beautiful, but to me it's about as far from "elegant" as you could possibly get. I don't think that "sophisticated" would come to mind either.

It's a New Money pen. It's for somebody who just won the lottery and wants to make sure everybody knows it.

I might have said "opulent" or "ornate." The Blue Nile is a great pen for someone who understands and appreciates the symbols of Pharaonic culture. With the Last Pharaoh about to head down the Blue Nile himself, using the pen now makes quite a statement and would certainly be a conversation starter.

The Spirit of Life - Salman's calligraphy, Henry's overlay...

Oooooh! Elegant, Gorgeous, I would enjoy having a pen like that!

And the MB Hemingway is always a good contender :hmm1:

Parker Black and Pearl duofold-- to me, strikes the perfect balance of class and sophistication, with a teeny hint of bling ;)

Currently inked:

Smoke TWSBI 540, F, with Diamine Onyx Black

Pilot Prera, M, with De Atramentis Jules Verne

Sorry, I can't get on board with those.

The 149 is too fat and bulbous to ever be called elegant. Elegant = slim.

The Visconti is a typical over done rococo piece of Italian over the top glitz - again, not IMHO elegant.

I guess the Hemingway comes closest, but for whatever reason I have never liked that model - reminds me too much of Hallowe'en I guess. Can't believe that many people rave about it.

If I had to nominate a Visconti for elegance, I'd go with the Divine Proportion, or any of the various clones of it - not too over done yet not in any way stark.

If I had to nominate a MB for elegance, I would probably offer up the 146, which is just smaller enough in bulk to pass as elegant, in whatever finish you like - I'd pick a nice pinstripe vermeil, myself.

I remember being very taken by the Montblanc Ramses II. I bought a Waterman L'Etalion that day instead. I had the dosh, I should have sprung for the Ramses II. Edit: the L'Etalion was a bust for me. Decided I wasn't at all happy with it and traded it to my then-brother-in-law. He never completed his end of the trade.

This is a beautiful pen and practical for carry even today. Thanks for taking this nice photo with traditional blue black ink.

Elegant = slim??? Noways!! The elegance of the 149 is in its boldness!!

wspohn, I pity thee....

The Cross Sauvage must have been inspired by this pen.

Oh no. You just blew up my wish list!

That's a lovely pen!

It is indeed. And this pen is actually affordable

Seek that which is true, beautiful, and good.

Well alright, how about 'portly'? In any case a tad too corpulent to fall into the elegant class.

An elegant pen should remind one of a slim gentleman in an expensive pinstripe tailored suit. That Visconti you nominated puts me in mind of Bozo the Clown, not Dapper Dan. :P

The Hemingway is definitely understated enough to be elegant, although as I said, for some reason it isn't to my taste (wish I knew what others saw in it).

There are other pens I own that are much more legant. The Waterman CF, with stylish nib and interesting patterns would be one.

The Waterman LE Etoile is another:

I think that the Waterman Serenite may be considered an elegant pen - for some an acquired taste I understand, though I like it.

The Waterman Gentleman is another slim (note - these are all slim pens) elegant model

I won't bother posting more images, but there are other pens in my portfolio that might also qualify like the Waterman Man 200 Night and Day, some of the Sheaffer Targas (not the Waterman Edson - too fat ... er, I mean MB ish...)

I can't make up my mind about the Serenite. My inner obsessive-compulsive wants to grab it and bend it straight again, but my inner artist says, "Look how beautiful it is!"

MB 149's are not elegant. They're a black pen. Hold it against a Equipoise or a CS Oxford and you see that!!!No one asked what your fave pen was. Thanks

They were not the only ones, but I think they're the two more beautiful/elegant ones I have. Another one that comes close is a Montegrappa Miya Argento in dark blue but although quite beautiful to my eyes, is a bit on the fat side, so maybe it would not fit in the "elegant" criteria... And if I'd include it then I'd have to include my dear Aurora 85th anniversary, and...
