Here's today's effort :

Very nice! And thanks for the tip with the Diamine ink - I already have some bottles of their fountain pen ink but my next order will probably include some of the calligraphy ink - the purple looks great on their page (and the orange, and the blue/black ... oh my!).

Oh dear! Looks like you left it in the mug too long, and it needed to go to the loo desperately (the crossed tines are a dead giveaway!) :bunny01:

:ltcapd:

Your exercise sheet looks lovely. I love the colour of the ink.

In other news: I've been on a bit of a hiatus from practice the past few days. I think I've hit a wall and seem to be regressing rather than making progress. I think I'll let it rest for a few more days (as is not even try) and see how it goes after that.

So back to my trusty broad nibs until then.

Thank you, Achim and Salman!

I have done another exercise sheet, this time using Gouache. It is so much nicer to write with Gouache. The nib is actually smoother and glides better on the paper. My main problem is that I think my downstroke is still too wide.

Lovely, simply lovely to look at------

I never used to care for the color orange but in fountain pen & dip pen use I find I'm drawn to it  :meow:

Sorry to derail the thread but what does the OP mean by "Walnut ink" in

Ink

I am using Walnut ink for practice although I switch to Pelikan Brown and Brilliant Black on occasion. I tried Higgins Eternal Black but found it a little too thick - that might just be the paper though as I find it an excellent ink for broad nib work.

What brand exactly is it? I really like it.

Its Walnut ink crystals I got from John Neal Bookseller - you'll find the listing towards the end of this page. You mix the crystals with some distilled water to make the ink - one can vary the proportions a bit to get different shades. I like it a lot.

It's with acrylic that you need to be fastidious about pen hygiene, not gouache. Real gouache is just opaque watercolor, which dissolves in water. If gouache dries on your pen, soak it in water and toothbrush it gently: gouache gone. But acrylic is plastic. You may peel dried acrylic off in sheets, but you won't wash it away.

Thanks! Well, today's practise sheet was done with water-soluble ink :

Today I tried the "Sönnecken Federsteller Nr. 525" with a standard penholder and an Esterbrook 357. Here's the result - it feels very similar to a dedicated oblique penholder.

OK - so I have suspended practice but I just had to do something related to Copperplate - so I made myself an oblique holder for the Brause 66 EF nibs. I have ordered some holders for these nibs but they'll get here at the end of the month.

This is made out of walnut wood I salvaged from a beat up old shelf. It has been polished once and needs another 2-3 coats.

And here's another view:

It was a cool project that kept me busy and out of trouble ;-)

GP - thanks for the appreciation

Javiersan Welcome to FPN. Thats a nice holder, what wood did you use?

Soki the hole bored out for the nib has a dowel of slightly smaller diameter inside it. The nib slides into to the gap.
