What Is The Best Brown Ink In The Market?

I prefer greens but like the Montblanc toffee brown...more than the Waterman Havana brown.

The browns I can use at work but my ink preference is normally green....it has been my ink of choice since military service in my teens.

Rob Maguire (Plse call me "M or Mags" like my friends do...)I use a Tablet, Apple Pencil and a fountain pen. Targas, Sailor, MB, Visconti, Aurora, vintage Parkers, all wonderful.

I didn't read through the entire thread but Noodler's Walnut if it hasn't been mentioned. A very rich brown which is darker and shades better than Noodler's #41.

I always get a kick out of these "no affiliation" notations when it's blatantly obvious the poster has absolutely nothing to do with the brand, company, etc. beyond being a customer. It must be a feel-good/feel-important thing. So I'll note up front that nothing I write here on this forum is influenced by any financial-gain motivation.

If you need a waterproof ink then FPN Galileo MAnuscript, Noodlers Walnut or 41 will do fine.

Havana Brown is nice but will run off with a drop of water.

Pelikan Brown is nice too, but if you leave your work in the sun for a few minutes it might fade away. That ink hasn't done well in light tests.

+1 for Grand Canyon, a nice earthy brown.

Noodlers 41 and FPN Manuscript. I haven't tired many others because I'm so happy with these.

Same.

FPN Galileo Manuscript Brown has a reddish undertone, while #41 is deep and dark. Both bulletproof.

Make that for me too! I always have the Manuscript Brown in at least one pen. Currently it is in my MB Alexandre Dumas....compliments the pen well!

The #41 goes in finer nibs.

So far for me it's been (in no particular order...)J. Herbin Cafe des iles - which drives me to drinking way more coffee when I use it roflmho.gifNoodler's walnut (and it might be time for a new bottle) MB toffee brownNoodlers Kiowa pecan

Somedays I prefer one over the other... headsmack.gif

I've also tried lie de the which I find too green, cacao du bresil (too grey) and waterman Havana brown (waaaayyyyy too red for my taste!)Reading this post, I would love to get my hands on some of the diamine browns puddle.gif

On a never ending quest for the 'perfect' pen, ink, paper combo... Then again where would the fun be in finding perfection!!

Hi,

To my eye, the Pelikan leans more toward Yellow, while the Waterman leans more toward Red. Both inks are low maintenance, with pretty good performance profiles.

I've reviewed those inks, (and a number of other Browns), so a reasonably on-the-level comparison can be made, though neither ink jangled my bangles. Please note that I write with a light brisk hand, so please peruse other Member's depictions:

Hi,

The Waterman Havana was renamed as 'Absolute Brown', with no apparent difference in performance/appearance.

Oh, I leave the choosing up to you. You know which pen+paper combos will be paired with those inks, and just what will be written. :)

Should you have any questions after reading the Ink Reviews, please do not hesitate to ask.

I prefer Waterman over Pelikan as Pelikan is a very light brown-yellow and Waterman is darker. Waterman is a great ink but by far the one I prefer most for color alone is Diamine Chocolate. DI is a rich full brown without any of the red hue that Waterman has.

Noodler's #41 Brown... a deep, rich, full brown color. No red undertones like Waterman's Havana Brown. Smooth writing and beautiful!

And bullet proof too. :)

I think of my FPs as my children.

Hi,

Please note that Noodler's № 41 Brown mentioned in some of the early Replies was reformulated in 2012, and the name was not changed. I posted a wee Comparison between those two inks here: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/213949-comparison-noodlers-41-brown-41-2012/?p=2239284

It may be the case that some of the other inks mentioned were also reformulated and bear the same name, in particular Kaweco and Herbin.

I suggest that dear readers gather the most current information about any ink they contemplate purchasing - hopefully it hasn't been discontinued.

I'm pretty partial to dark browns - my 3 picks are Pilot Yama-guri, Diamine Macassar and Herbin Cacao du Bresil.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.
