Replacement Nibs For Platinum Preppy Or Plaisir?

xpacker

Recommended Posts

I really like the Platinum Preppy, which writes nicely but is unlikely to be nabbed if left at work. The barrel/etc are so sturdy -- I was wondering if there is a replacement nib available for it? If so, I could consider getting a Plaisir, too, assuming they would use the same nib.

I've looked online but never found a mention of one. Does anyone have an idea where I might look?

Thanks.

At $3 for the pen, it's probably cheaper to buy a whole new one!

Exactly. Most of the cost is probably in the nib/feed unit itself, so just buy a whole new pen.

Cost is not as important to me as re-using usable items -- I'm trying to minimize what I landfill. Also, I'd hate to throw away a $20 Plaisir just because the nib is worn.

Are nibs interchangeable? I'm not averse to using a nib made for another pen, if it will fit.

Thanks.

As I understand it, the nib units are the same for both pens.

If the nib wears out on your Plaisir, you can buy a $3/$4 Preppy and transplant the nib

If you wear out the nib on any pen, even the cheap ones, you've gotten well over $20 of use from it. That is unless you write on sandpaper.

If you are concerned about landfill why not buy a $20 vintage pen. You save it from being junked and will probably last longer than the Plasir.

The above is MY opinion. Would you expect it to be from someone else?

How about this:

pull out the nib, send it over to the plaisir, and change out the Preppy to be a marker.

Then, you're going to be wondering about what to do with the markers. Simple, fill eight of them up, tape them shut and give them to your kid. If they ever become low, you just refill the ink ED style (Darn, why didn't my dad think about this five years ago?)

But in all honesty, I've gotten a Preppy nib to work for half a year and it's showing no signs of wear except for the black film wearing out. So it should last for another year or so. Meanwhile, the cap has already been completely broken.

Thanks for all your feedback. I'm assuming that one cannot take a nib from, say, Lamy, and put it in a Platinum. That would be asking too much, I suppose.

I would just use the Preppy and forget about the Plaisir. They both use the exact same nib and feed, except the Plaisir is a lot more expensive. For a $3 pen you will get more than your money's worth by using it. You can also convert it to eyedropper if you want. I've just published a review of the Preppy on my blog so if you wish, you can read more about how I feel about the Preppy.

Mine hasn't cracked yet but I haven't used it a lot either. I did mention in the review that the material feels a little brittle.

If you already wore out a nib, how? If you are planning to, why?

Hahaha. No, I just recently got it. But one of the reasons I like fountain pens is that they are not disposable. I try to avoid landfilling stuff as much as possible. I was just thinking ahead: how to prolong the use of the plastic barrel. However, if it's as brittle as reviewed, then it may not even last as long as the nib. At any rate, I will be able to refill the Preppy enough to assuage my guilt over eventually tossing it in the dustbin. I have a converter for it.

Xpacker, I'm with you about the landfill. The Preppy is prone to cracking though. There are other inexpensive pens that will wear better (the Sheaffer No Nonsense, Pilot 78g or 1970's Platinum come to mind...SpeerBob sells those). At any rate you seem concerned the Preppy's nib will wear out and need replacing? I'd be more concerned about the barrel.

Kind regards.

Hmmm. I guess I'll wait till the barrel cracks, then save the nib (if still good) and buy a Plaisir. I do like the way the Preppy writes, so if the barrel is the limiting factor, I can upgrade to a Plaisir when the time comes.
