Caran D'ache Saffron

I have an extreme soft spot for orange inks. I try out a million different shades looking for the perfect one and have now come up with a few that I really love. This one may have almost taken top prize when I sampled it a few days ago. I love shading in inks, and this orange shades more than any other I've tried. I wrote in the below review that writing with this ink is like writing with a flickering fire, and it really feels that way. I bought a bottle of this immediately after trying this sample.

A few more shots on my blog here.

That's awesome. I've been meaning to pick up a bottle of Saffron myself. That looks gorgeous.

I'm not a fan of orange inks generally, but when they shade like this - I certainly am! Check out Noodler's Apache Sunset and Habañero as well; two other great shaders. I think the Pilot Iro Yu-Yake is another...

Out of curiosity, how did you do your dry times test? The 20-minute smudge seems unacceptably excessive to me. You do say that it's on the high side of wet, of course.

Sorry, I didn't think to specify. The dry times are in seconds. :)

mholve - I've got a bottle of the Habanero, which I love. It is perfect for sketching. I've also got a sample of the Apache Sunset waiting in the wings for when my Wall Street is done with the Caran d'Ache. :D I'm still trying to get my hands on a sample of Yu-Yake before I splurge on a bottle though.

Ahh, well that would pretty clearly explain it, I guess.

They used to say that there's no such thing as a stupid question. I've obviously proven them wrong tonight!

I've recently tried the Caran d'Ache Saffron and I fully agree--it shades wonderfully and is a great color! The bottle is also nice!

Thanks for an in-depth look at the Saffron. This is one of my favorite inks. I'm with you, I just adore the polychrome effect of the shading. Beautiful!

I am not really an orange ink person, but because of the reddish hint in this ink and the lovely shading there is always one pen inked with it at all times. :) Lovely color and great flow.

I really should go ahead and pick this up - I've got CdA Amazon, Storm, and Caribbean Sea and love them all (okay, I don't love the prices, but sometimes it's worth it).

Do they all shade this much?

In my experience with this colour plus Amazon, Sunset, Storm and Caribbean Sea, yes, but it does vary from pen to pen and according to the paper as well. I do think that Saffron shades the most, by a smidgen, though. Love this brand of ink very much but particularly the Saffron. Thanks for the review!
