My First 51! Writing Dry :(

Recommended Posts

I recently bought my first Parker 51! It is a Vacumatic.

Unfortunately, it is writing too dry. I flushed the pen pretty well, and refilled, but it's still dry for me to use comfortably.

Is there anything else I can do? How do you disassemble these things?

Have you tried a wetter ink. Watermans is pretty wet.

Some inks can help, but you may need to send it out for some nib adjustment. I recently sent a dry and a bit scratchy Parker "51" to Richard Binder. I haven't got the pen back yet, but am very optimistic about the potential results.

Thanks Alan. That helped a lot. I flushed the pen again, and filled it with Waterman black. It is much wetter now. I guess it didn't like my first ink.

But I still don't love the way it writes. I'll see if using this ink flushes out the feed (assuming that is the problem).

I'll tinker with it a little more, and if I can't get it how I want it, I'll pass it on to someone else.

I wouldn't give up on it though, it probably just needs a thorough cleaning. There are many "pen fixers" advertising in the professional repair section - I would send it to them before I sell it...unless you don't like the color/style or something.
