Akkerman Inks From The Netherlands

For anyone who is interested in an article on the Akkerman Pen shop in The Hague and their jubilee, this is what Pen World Magazine wrote about them. The link to the article can also be found on their website. (And I am going to visit their shop soon... )

Tataaah...... Anticipating my birthday my dear husband gave me a bottle of #15 Voorhout Violet today! (And there is more to come...)

 

First impressions: quite a dark, beautiful, saturated color. A wet ink that flows well. Kind of classy shade and yet not at all "middle of the road".

 

Bit busy the coming days, but I'll try to scan and upload a sample to share this with you soon.

 

P.S. did not yet visit the shop myself, hopefully I'll have a chance next week.

Well, as I promised I made a scan. I tried to correct the color after scanning, but on my monitor the scan appears still a tad bit too light. It is a very deep purple, that tends towards grey-ish when it is used in a wet pen. I.m.h.o. this ink could for example be used by professionals who want to make a serious (first! hahah) impression (doctors, notaries, real estate agents???) but who are bored by the dark blues and blacks. This is my first association though...

EDIT: hope this doesn't sound too weird...!

 

When thinking of violet or purple, at first I wouldn't associate these shades with being serious and stylish. But I believe this ink is.

 

Maybe I will be tempted to make my first ink review on this ink. Depends on my spare time.

This Voorhout Violet might be a serious contender to replace Herbin Poussiere de Lune for me. I find the Akkerman bottle so much better for filling, than the tiny Herbin bottle. This is the type of colour I favour for more serious letter writing. I have been using Herbin so far, because I know it is innocuous "safe" ink, and my pen was made in 1928, so I baby it a bit. Is there any chance I could get you to wet a Q-tip and drag it over the dried ink to see how it smudges. The Herbin I have been using has no water resistance to speak of and if this has some, it may be worth my while to beg friends in the Netherlands to buy me a bottle.

You mean like this? I went over the ink a few times. If you use quite a wet pen, and once the ink has dried properly (like with the dip pen) it looks pretty water resistant.

 

 

 

 

Dry ink (it took > 20 seconds to dry) is does not smudge at all when wiped with dry Q-tip or dry fingers.

 

P.S. Don't know how to make the image any smaller. I already reduced the file size.

The latest batch of Akkerman inks showed up today, so I'll post scans as I get them done. First up is #26 since someone had asked about it previously:

Written with a Lamy 1.1mm italic. I expected more of a blue-green color from looking at the swab on the Akkerman website, but it is really a green black. It is a fairly wet ink with good shading (although the shading isn't quite as dramatic as the scan makes it appear).

Yes, you are absolutely right, the shading looks nice indeed, Sam. However the scan as I said is slightly too clear, which also makes the shading more visible than in real life so to speak. (Just like with Geoduc's scan.)

Nice one, thanks geoduc! I'm also waiting for this one to arrive. It also looked more blue- green on the chart, but I like it. Dark enough to slip in at work...

geoduc, I think I was the one asking for a scan. It looks different from the original scan, but I really like it. Can't wait for this to arrive. My order shipped 4-4; I have a long way to go. Really like your scan and your handwriting, love the shading.

I got to see a couple of bottles of Akkerman yesterday and I must say that the bottles are beautiful, functional and MUCH larger than I pictured. The ink within was beautiful and lays and incredibly wet line in my M Safari.

Man, you folks are making it difficult for me to turn the other cheek on these. My hypothetical order of four bottles conjured up from the original sample sheet would include the Diep-Duinwaterblauw, Voorhout Violet, and Groenmarkt Smaragd, and here you are, showing me those very hues. And they're looking good, too!

 

The only one of the four that caught my eye that I haven't seen reviewed yet is number 22, Hopjesbruin. Anyone else find this one interesting?

I have those exact colors - including the Hopjesbruin - in my next shipment, will post as soon as I have them

drifting, the shipping jumps up when you add that 4th bottle. After comparing the pricing, you might want to limit to 3 or add a couple more and go for 6 or 7. Those seem to be the best values.

 

Anxiously waiting on my first order and already planning my second order.
