Favorite Omas Celluloid...

Bryant

Recommended Posts

And hopefully may I request we try to design a pen closer to Omas's original heritage? As much as I like large pens, an oversize, oversize Paragon with metal section probably isn't my preference.

Bryant already indicated he liked the old-style Paragon and the Ogiva. Those go back more or less to the 1930s and 1940-50s, respectively,

I like the 2nd down on the top right - zebra? And that yellow and black is one I can't look away from, but whether it would wear well on the eyes...

Other than the murky brown, they're all gorgeous. But then I'm not much for browns.

I will definitely be purchasing one if it is either the burl wood pattern (like the Visconti) or the black and yellow tiger pattern just above it in the first photo. Really lovely celluloid.

With exception, I believe these are their names -- if not official, at least generally accepted or used name. There are definitely people here who know better than I do. I'm relinking Bryant's photos so people won't have to scroll, which I hope is OK.

Left:

- Blue Saffron

- Black Gold

- Saft Green

- Scarlet

- Foglie di Autunno; sometime just "Autunno" (translation: Autumn leaves, or just Autumn)

Right:

- Blue Royale

- Pearl Gray

- Arco Green

- Transparent Black Gold*

- Wood*

*Not sure if these are the official names

- Arco Brown

- Burkina

- Wild (also called Galileo celluloid since it appeared first on that pen)

- Blue Saffron (again)

Thanks Eric...

Some more information... Looks like they will only do new style pens with the number of pens I want. They will do older style pens if I commit to 200+pens. Which... Im not willing to do. So if its done, it looks like it will most likely be new style Milord.

But as of now, only one celluloid is not a choice. Thats the Transparent Black and Gold.

And looks like it will have to be a run of 80 pens. Which works, as I believe its Omas's 88th anniversary, so I would do 88...

Cheers!

Ok, keep us posted on the celluloid choice(s).

Yes, please try to keep price point down for us poor souls who really want this pen but already have spent too much on too many! And umm... often with you!

The transparent green and gold is very pretty, especially with the picture of the extra lucens above - it would be nice also given the lack of ink window in the Milord to have a transparent celluloid.

Looking forward to the end result!

I like the arco green or perhaps the gray but sometimes hard to envison the final pen - unless someone has pictures of completed Omas pens in the various celluloids?

Bryant, This long thread of responses shows you how much interest there is in an unusal Omas celluloid pen. Frankly, I am confused at this point what you plan to make, but it sounds like a) new style Milord, B) blue celluloid. If so this is kind of boring in my opinion. Perhaps you could spice it up with one of the Omas flexible nibs such as the one that as used in the Italia 1990 or I believe the "Portico" nib (see Mottishaws web site about this nib). The nib could really distinguish this pen and make it something special. Omas may have an easier time working with you on a nib then on the celluloids and pen body--and since what we really want these penss for is writing--get us a great nib!

I mentioned earlier that Omas made or had made the "Extra Flessibile" nibs -- they're in the nib kit. There are/were an EF, F, M, and B nibs. But a store told me that Omas wouldn't mount the M or higher because they just spewed ink. Also at the end of last year, I bought the last two EFs the factory had. I do not know if there were/are plans to have more made by Bock

A nib like the Italia 1990 I suspect they won't do, since it was made in house and Omas doesn't do that anymore.

Any way to get the humpbacked nib that's on the Ingegno? I've never used a more incredible nib and the fact I'm head over heels over an M nib should tell you something! :notworthy1:

Im pretty sure they wont do that nib for me... 99.99% sure :)

As for the pen, I will most likely do an new style milord, but if that blue is my only choice, I wont do a pen at all. It does not move me at all. As of now Im pretty sure it will be new milord, but Im just waiting to see what colors I will be able to use. I also thought the brown celluloid would look cool on a 360...

Has anyone seen the new 360s? Not the most recent ones sold, but they just redesigned it again. Curious to here what people think... The edges are much more cut and sharp then the most recent version... And the bands are different...

Ooh, I really like that blue saffron.

Of their current pens, I love the Arco - I just wish the Paragon version had a celluloid section.

Haven't seen the new, new 360s - really disliked the first new one ( loved the original - especially the larger size ).

I'm with Bryant on the blue, just not interesting enough (& no comparison to the Chatt Delta LE).

New milord is large so I'd be happy with that, open to Ogiva style and happy to check out new, new 360.

On the new-style Milord, one suggestion assuming you get a different celluloid, see if you can get it made without the gold or rhodium trim ring on the section. For one I think it doesn't look so great. Two, it just another spot where the plating can wear, and Omas plating has never been all that stellar.

I'd mostly be out on a new Milord unless done in a celluloid that was never used on an old-style Paragon. Of the Burkina, the wood, and Autunno, my preference would be for the Autunno.

New 360, I don't care for it all that much. I think bugmd put it the best when he said the new 360 is like new Coke.

Getting to this party kind of late, but what are the chances that Omas would be open to milling the green Arco on the opposite bias (a la quarter-sawn oak) to create the Spina de Pesce pattern again? The ones that they did for Novelli (?) in the brown Arco were gorgeous.

Wait...nevermind. Just remembered that you're tentatively planning on using the modern Milord style, and I doubt that the Spina pattern would look all that great on a faceted pen.
