Favorite Omas Celluloid...

Bryant

Recommended Posts

Wow, if that's the 2nd place choice, can't wait to see what's in 1st place, Bry!!!

Didn't he indicate at the outset it's Arco Green?

That is Bry's 'personal favorite'...but he didn't say that this would be the first choice....if so, think the entire thread would be different....

Oh ok, guess I didn't read carefully or interpreted differently the 'my' in "Its my second on the list of the rods that where shown". No biggie.

I pretty much know what all the modern Omas celluloids are and look like. I'm curious more than anything about which they still have left and/or willing to use for a commissioned pen -- in particular whether they used up the last of the Arco Green on some old-style Paragons they made at the end of last year.

How about this Omas Extra Lucens LE? I was very lucky to grab this one in that new year's day omas auction...

This was one of the celluloids that was shown to me actually... Its my second on the list of the rods that where shown... I will take some phone pics tomorrow and post them...

Cheers!

Bry

This is a lovely celluloid, which I would like very much. Don't own a Omas yet, but that could change... :puddle:

Am I too late to the party?

I'd love the Ogiva (old) shape in the black Extra Lucens celluloid. :puddle:

Here are the celluloids that were shown to me... They need to be persuaded a bit on which ones they will give up. And negotiating needs to happen on volume, cost and so on, but I thought I would show the rods I was shown...

Most where the usual suspects, but one was a bit of surprise. :) Then randomly explained later the next night :)

Sorry about the bad phone pics...

very nice!!!

Of those, I think I like the green Arco, or the one immediately below it (looks Lucens-ish, but isn't?) - but frankly I'd go with almost all except the saft and blue (that I already have plenty of)

There are some interesting choices.

I'm surprised to see the wood pattern celluloid. I've seen that material on an LE pen.

So now that we have seen the celluloid, what pen bodies are Omas willing to make?

A old style Paragon in Burkina, wood pattern celluloid, and the dark marble one (the one below the scarlet) would be kinda of cool.

Maybe they could do a "Leftover 2" pen where they glue pieces of all the celluloids together. :roflmho:

Now, now Ricky... rolleyes.gif You have to admit, Omas willing to do some boutique style pens, for the little guy is a good step in the right direction... The celluloids might not be new, but it would cost me a fortune to pay for a new celluloid and commit to over 1000 pens. Besides, it would not be called leftovers, it would be called the "collage"thumbup.gif

They are pretty open to options for size of pen, Im leaning towards old style Paragon. Its a shape Ive always liked.

Instead of 'collage' it could the Arlecchino Noveau. Actually is is good that they are flexible enough to make small runs. Of course, Omas used to have a made to order service when Armando Simoni was still running the company.

The old style Paragon would be great for some of the celluloid. The ones that have not been used for an old style Paragon would be a draw. For some of the other celluloid rods, the old style Ogiva would be a nice body since it has not been done before.

That green arch is stunning. The spiral grey and wood brown are also tempting.

What would be the estimated cost?

Can't wait!

Thanks for the photos Bryant. Nearly all the modern celluloids are there -- interesting. I thought they'd used up the Saft Green. And there are a few missing, e.g. Arco Brown [thanks ozwill45], Lucens transparent blue, as well as the Arlecchino. (The Ercolessi green isn't there, but that one doesn't surpise me; they probably sucked it up and did the 1000+ run.)

Which LE used the wood pattern celluloid? There are some actual wood LE and regular production pens. I don't recall a wood celluloid.

Omas has made commissioned pens in double-digit runs. Tom's Urbano was supposed to be only 35, although it climbed without warning to around 50. The Musso Stilografica was 75, while the Vecchietti was 80. How high are you going to have to go, if you don't mind my asking?

About the old-style Paragon, I agree with Ricky here (as well as the previous thread about your commissioning an Omas), that with a lot of the celluloids, you'd be rehashing what's already been done whether all gold or HT (rhodium). In fact, Ricky singled out the three never used on an old-style Paragon: Burkina, the wood, and Autunno (which is the dark one under the Scarlet).

The only other ones not used yet come close to another pen are the transparent black gold Lucens and the solid black-gold (used on the Extra Lucens and Lucens caps only as well as completely on a Bologna and mini Ogiva). The Extra Lucens is close to an old-style Paragon, but the barrels and piston knob are different as well as the sizing of the pen.

If you go with a "round" Paragon, like the Urbano I posted above, things are little more open. However, the Wild (Urbano), Scarlet (Musso), blue saffon (Vecchietti), Arco Brown (Omas), Arco Green (Omas), Burkina (Omas) have been used before. (I'm excluding a Rebecca Moss in pearl gray because the clip was kinda ugly that it didn't really look like an Omas, LOL.)

Ricky's other suggestion of a big size Ogiva is also good since things are much more open. The only regular production big pen is the Autunno. The Armando Simoni Club did do a black lucens combination of an Ogiva. Last year Omas did some mini Ogivas in Blue Royale and Black Gold (non-transparent).

Eric,

I think the 7th picture, first rod might be arco brown, but I,m not sure.

I would love to see the Arlecchino in the mix...

The pen was made for Franck Muller.

One was sold at the Bonhams auction last year.

The numbers we are talking about are 50 pens total. But nothing is for sure yet... So many unknowns right now. If they are willing to work with me, this will not be the first and only one. So I may try to make the first one easy on all ends.

I like the Idea of an Ogiva, this would be good for sure. Especially since all the materials have been used before.

The Limited Edition I was talking about was much higher production... They made 1618 of the main version. :)

For some reason it doesn't surprise me on the blue, that's probably the most ubiquitous of the modern celluloids; they must have made a couple of boatloads of that. Still a big Ogiva in that I'd be into; the mini Ogivas of last year were insanely priced. They've made celluloid big Ogivas before, so they have specs for turning them.

The Ercolessi (1996) which has its own shade of green, different from the Saft Green, was 1921 pens!!!

I think my pick of the bunch would be arco green.

And hopefully may I request we try to design a pen closer to Omas's original heritage? As much as I like large pens, an oversize, oversize Paragon with metal section probably isn't my preference. Then again, I know Bryant has good taste! :happyberet:
