Favorite Omas Celluloid...

Here's some suggestions from my ol' OMAS's....not the best pics, but hopefully, you get the idea....

The 3 pens on the left are old OMAS Extra Lucens:

The first two from the left, Vacumatic-looking, are really something :puddle:. I'm guessing they are quite difficult to find and expensive? Where did you found these jewels?

Wow! WOW! Gorgeous pens!

P.S. Wow!

P.S. Wow!

Thanks for the kind words, Mihai!...

Yes, they are quite handsome I think....all of them look as if they were almost brand new!...

You're right, not that easy to find (but possible...) and not cheap either....got one in US, one from Italy, and the other from Bulgaria!....

Thanks!

  • 2 weeks later...

I would love to see a Wild Bologna with HT trim, would be all over that in a skinny minute. Sorta big brother to the ever elusive Urbano VIII.

Actually, the Urbano is old-style Paragon size. So I think a Wild Bologna HT would be a little brother with a less refined clip and cap ring.

Elusive? The Urbano VIII isn't that elusive. ;) I have one (now). I think there's still one on eBay US...if you're willing to pay the price.

Actually I'd love to see a round Arco Green HT (like the Urbano) with the same furniture. Omas made the Arco Green set (only 20 sets!!!) with 3 thin cap rings, so I'd doubt they'd redo that version.

Or better yet, can they do the Arco Green in the "fish scale" pattern like they did for I believe Novelli in Italy?

It was called "spina di pesce", which is more "fish bones". I suppose a creative name for what is often called a "ripple" effect. It was a small production run but not made exclusively for or even sold by Novelli. Those FP & RB sets (Arco Green, Arco Brown, Spina di Pesce) were made in very limited quantities, and I believe distributed only in Italy. The later Burkina set was made in a relatively higher quantity, and also saw wider distribution outside.

Also how about something different that the standard Omas nib, perhaps they have a version with more flex like they used in the 1990 special edition for the World Cup--that would be really cool.

They did make (or had Bock make) the "Extra Flessibile" nib in the old Paragon size. However, I believe some of the sizes are sold out, unless Omas reordered them. Towards the end of last year, I bought the last two EF nibs that Omas had.

Got to tell you, I consider a production run of 35 to be rare. Tay still has one listed on his site. I prefer the size of the current Bologna series over the older Paragons, sold all of mine except the Galileo.

Rare isn't the same as elusive -- at least for me because I have one, LOL. But I only got it a month ago after years of waiting/searching; I actually thought I'd never see one hit the used market. It was used, so I have no issues with inking it now. :P

Production is a little higher according Tom Westerich who commissioned the pen, see here. 35 was the number for Germany. A few more made their way to the US, but Tom pegs the max. at 50.

Sometime Tay's keeps the listing up even if he no longer has the pens.

The Bologna's not a bad pen in terms of size; I've tried the scarlet celluloid. I just don't like the metal section, the big step in the barrel, and the furniture, which look somewhat low-budget to me.

Interesting that you kept the Galileo since it's actually smaller than the old-style Paragons. I thought you liked larger pens. Perhaps it was the celluloid driving that decision.

As much as I like Eric's Urbano VIII(:puddle:),I think my vote would go to Archimark's Extra Lucens

from the "wild" with the cracked ice/tortoiseshell look.............:puddle: :puddle: :puddle:

Minus the metal section idea of course....................

Omas perfection for me is Color = old style Arco brown and 2nd is Autunno. Unsolicited body type = Ogiva Guilloche (love them ridges!)

Were it merely an "academic" exercise, I would agree the vintage (transparent) cracked ice is better than the modern version.

But Bryant asked with regard to commissioning a pen. So he needs to work with available, mostly likely only, modern celluloid that Omas has. I recall from a previoius thread that Omas isn't into using others' celluloid. I don't think it a good idea to take Archimark's Extra Lucens and turn it into say a Bologna. ;)

Actually I'm a little down on the Galileo/Wild celluloid anyway. It wasn't cured enough when they made the Galileo. So shrinkage is quite common on that pen, resulting in loose cap rings. I gave mine the restorer of my vintage pens, who reworked the seats and the cap rings so they're tight again. Perhaps with additional years the material is more stable now. The Urbano is fine, and the 360s I've seen don't suffer from that problem.

LOL, it's also common the first year Arco Greens too. I had the same issue on one of those, and have seen other first years with the problem.

Bryant,

Arco green, wild or Scarlet would get me very interested. Actually I'll be interested whatever but it might be nice to have one of the older styles. Now the extra lucens would be really nice.
