Parker Vac Date Code 1

Recommended Posts

I just received my first Parker Vac. One of the most beautiful pens I have ever seen! I would like to know the model. I am also interested in a new nib. The one on the pen has been ground down to a bold and has flex. I do not care to much for bold and flexible nibs and would like to use this pen. I put a Parker 95 next to it for proportions. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Looks to be a Maxima-sized,Golden Pearl Vac w/Speedline filler. Date code should

be on the barrel just behind the Vac imprint. If it's just a "1" (as in your title),then it

would have been made in the 4th quarter of 1941.

Thank you John! Can you tell me what the Streamline name means. Also, if you have any idea as to the value of the pen I would greatly appreciate it. I am trying to decide if I should send it off or restore it my self.

Your welcome!

Streamline refers to the type of styling that Parker was looking to achieve over

their 1st generation "chunky" styling(which IMHO,looks better than 2nd gen.--which

is what yours is). The whole idea was to smooth out the look of the 1st gen. style.

I would say that if you're not familiar with restoring a fountain pen, suggestion would

be to use one of the members on FPN that have done quality restoration for some time.

Looks more like a 2nd gen major to me. Seven feathers on the nib, size of the filler to barrel, and the cap band. Nice lookimg pen! Should be right around 5" in length.

I vote for major, too, based (in part) on the width of the band. It's one size down from Maxima in girth. These are great pens -- I use them all the time. I think you do need a new nib, though. This one looks as though the tips have been ground down -- maybe after one of them broke?

As for where to get a new nib, loose nibs pop up on eBay from time to time; some of the repair guys also may have one or know where you can get one. You can try nibs.com, which sells and installs nibs but also retips old ones. The group probably has additional suggestions.

The pen measures 5.25 inches capped and the band is 4mm wide. There was a post in here somewhere with a link to a guide on vacumatics but I can't seem to find it now. I am very familiar with restoring pens just not vacs. I usually like to send higher end pens out but this one seems to not be on the high end value wise so I might give it a go myself. There is another new post with pics and her calls his a Maxima and the pens look identical. It would be of tremendous help in my search for a new nib if I knew the exact model. I dipped the pen and it actually wrote very well. It was able to produce lines from fine to BBB. Very easy to write with unlike my other flexible nib, a Waterman 52 1/2, which I do intend to sell! Again thank you to all fro your help!

A maxima should measure 5 3/4" long, the nib should have 9 feathers not seven the girth of the pen should be thicker and the cap band wider.

Here is a thread that has some of both link the max is the fourth from the left next to the shadow wave. The 2nd gen major is 3rd from the right. There is also a 3rd gen long major 2nd from the right. Hope that helps.

I have been looking for a nib and they are priced from $85 to $100(US)! Is this pen even worth that much? These pens sell on ebay all the time around $50 to $60 and sometimes much less!

if it's around 5 1/4 inches then it should be a second-generation long major, for which 1941 would be the right date.

vac nomenclature can be fiendishly complex to the uninitiated, but just to give you a sense of the range of things (by no means complete), here's a comparative shot of several vacumatics in my collection, all of them golden pearl:

Left to right: a Standard, a Senior Maxima, a Senior, a Long Major with the widest jeweler's band, another Long Major with another jeweler's band, a regular Long Major, a double-jeweled Junior, a single-jeweled Major, and an uncommon three-banded but single-jeweled Vac.

They look like silver pearl more than golden pearl, esp. with the chrome plated trim.

yes, john--unfortunately it's just bad lighting on my part ;)

My apologies if I came across smart-alecky--didn't mean to.

BTW,the Senior Maxima(4th pen from the left)--is that the one that you

used in your post about using one in your daily rotation? That's a sweet writer!

oh, no offense taken at all, john--was wondering the same thing myself when i took the pic--where did all the brown and gold go? maybe i'll correct it digitally one of these days ;)

and no, that's another senior max, my first golden-pearl one, which unfortunately (for me anyway) has a stiff fine nib.
