Hi Carol,

Perhaps you could PM Marie. She's the expert in 'diapering' :roflmho:

Warm regards,

Soki

Everyone, thank you for all of your expertise. I had a course on illuminating initial caps decades ago. Of course that was before gold hit $1,500 an ounce as it just did--a new high! I would appreciate more detail on the diapering effect. I tried to even Google it, but you can imagine what came up--nothing that had anything to do with art. Even Googling "diaper art" wouldn't get me near the topic.

Carol.

the diaper as a design device, is a Repeated Geometric, which Radiates From the Center. (that's the simple explanation, Seeing it in use will cement what it is)

will provide a few links to help you..

also, look at Calico fabric diaper device usage, and also Wallpaper Pattern fabric (Toile) will help you visualize the difference.

a correct diaper will allow you to to sight the central device by enclosing with straight four-sides. example a diamond. <>

here is a link with examples of patterns, design devices.. 22.1 = all over patterns, Including the diaper pattern, and wallpaper patterns. See which one's are totally random, which ones Radiate from the center, repeat, and you can place a Diamond shape around a center diaper device.. which ones are Geometric based, which ones are Pictorial based.

initially, this may confuse you.. sit with it for awhile. it will click.

diaper, geometric, radiating from center.. may run incomplete, off the edge.

wallpaper, pictorial, random placement repeat, runs off the edge. it may repeat the scene, but not geometric, runs incomplete off the edge.

as the "artist" you have control of your device.. and may tinker with it to achieve the effect you desire.

those of "us" who appreciate use of these patterns quickly discern when their use allows the Focal to pop.

Not easy, but very effective!

Thank you. This was VERY helpful! I think I get it now.

You're very welcome.. glad to know this.. was about to edit the too-lengthy reply.

Studied this an eon ago, and have used calico/toile fabrics to quickly establish the differences for others..

Among the professionals here, you may yet have a penmanship definition that will better aid your specific illumination needs.
