Thin Fountain Pens

Howdy all,

 

I was doing some writing early today with my lamy studio, and my fiance was quite impressed with it. She said she would love a fountain pen of her own but she would want one that was thinner.

 

So my question to all of you out in fountain pen land is this: Which fountain pen would be thinner than a Lamy Studio?

 

Im not sure if it is even possible but i thought i would just ask you all. Maybe something in a pink or red?

 

Most likely with a nice pink or red ink to go with it. I was thinking Noodlers black swan and roses, but what else would you recommend? (I know its on the darker side but its something i wanna try out too so why not get her some lol)

Shazam! These are essentially the Cross Century II fountain pens with different trim, a wider frosted cap band, and a charm hook. Thin, nicely balanced pens with good wet nibs. I've become a huge fan of Cross when it comes to modern pens - good construction, excellent warranty, and good value for the money.

 

No clue about the ink, but do keep in mind that thicker/more particulate laden inks like Noodler's bulletproof colors can give some pens trouble. I imagine the Cross feeds are wet enough to avoid the issue, but if you try it and don't like it, try a different ink fist!

Sailor chalana is pretty much the thinnest pen ever. It gets lost between your teeth, slips sideways between your epithelial cells... Very thin.

Sheaffer TRZ or Sheaffer Targa Slim. Incredibly small, incredibly smooth pens. Make sure you find one with a converter included though.

The Cross Century II was the first thing to come to my mind. They are very good pens. I have only one because, ironically, they are too narrow for me. They should be great for people who prefer narrow pens.

 

I think another option might be the Parker Sonnet. I do not know about others, but the Sonnet is about as narrow a pen as I can use comfortably. Yet I find them quite easy to hold. I have had very good luck with Sonnets, and I find them to be very good writers. I feel they are at least worthy of consideration.

The Waterman Hemisphere comes to mind... and they come in both pink and red.

 

There's also the Faber Castell Ambition line (also in a pinks and lilacs).

 

At a higher price point, Graf Faber and Caran D'ache make several lines of thin pens.

Reform 1745 is a thin pen and posts surprisingly long. So posted it is not a small pen, but just a thin one.

It is a piston filler, inexpensive, has a better nib as a 30-40 year old NOS 'vintage or just about vintage' piston filler school pen, than most of the modern nibs.

I have a Waterman Executive that is very thin and its a beautiful pen, probably out of everything my best writer, or close tie. Other Waterman pens from the same era, 80s-90s, seem to be thin as well, such as the Laureat and the Gentleman. Most can be found for under $100.00 with gold nibs and with lots of colour choices!

 

Then of course the Esterbrook LJ and SJ come to mind, the thinner of the common and classic J series pens. Now these are thin but maybe not thinner than the Lamy.

 

Pocket and Purse pens of any brands and eras would be a general direction to point you in.

 

I hope you find your fiance a nice fountain pen she can write with!

I prefer slim pens. I love the Cross Century II, and there is a very pretty version called the starlight For inexpensive Chinese pens, I like the way the Regals write, but I've had trouble with the converters not fitting well. The Noodler's piston filler is fairly slim and a very reliable writer. If you are willing to put more money and risk into an exciting pen consider a 1970s Aurora Hastil or Montblanc Slimline. I love the slimline I was given back then so much that I have bought two more, and with patience I found them for around $100 each, but one needed nib work. The slimline is below.

The Aurora Hastil comes to mind. It is thin, stainless steel with a gold point. Its design won several awards.

On the cheaper end, the Sailor Recruit. Fairly wet writer, but cartridge only (however you can always refill them with syringes)

 

Good nib on it though, I like it.

Parker 180, which is quite thin, but has an interesting double-sided nib similar to Richard Binders Italifine. The thin Sheaffer Targa and the thin Sheaffer Snorkels.

[Biber]

Elysee (metal bodied along the lines of Cross Century II), and thinner still is a Pilot Cavalier. You can also get similarly slim Chinese pens such as the Thames by Regal.
