So will keeping the inks out of the sun and in the box help stop actual fungal growth?

And what is the shelf life of inks and how do u know if and when it is bad and should be thrown out

No.

Sun kills fungus, but often kills the color. (We can have a whole discussion about keeping inks in the box and out of the sun. I have a different position - I have them out and about - though not in direct sun)

Biggest way to prevent slime, stib and icky stuff....

Don't contaminate your inks. Fill from small vials.

Add phenol to your ink (like the old days).

I have inks that are 3 decades old and they work great. I have a few inks that have gone bad after a few years. Watch for slimy icky stuff. Don't put your pen into slimy icky ink.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Whats phenol? Lol

And 30 decades? Thats like 300 years!!!

Is there a thread about in or out of the box? Dont inks have biocides in them? I am a noodlers and j. Herbin type of guy so far in my fountain pen hobby.

What youre saying is keep them out of the box but not in direct sunlight?

And as far as the kilking the color... my noodlers are almost all eternal bulletproof or both and are supposed to be untouched by uv. Or is that only after dried?

Reson i ask these things is i have so many bottles now it will takes years ir longer for some of them to be used.

About the filling feom vials, you mean use an ink syringe to take from bottle to sample vial, then fill pen from sample vial?

Sorry for all the questiins but im new and spent alot on all my inks .

Phenol is a biocide - and CA has decided it's bad for you, so a lot of ink companies are no longer using it. (See other threads for that discussion). I purchased a bottle from Natural pigments.

Sorry not 30 decades, 3 decades or 30 years. :) Though KTC is recrafted from an inkstone that probably is 300 years old.

Vials ..... I use these

As for in or out of the box ....

I display my inks ....

I have completed several fade tests and and currently have a test on going with actual ink bottles in the direct sun. So far (and it's been 4 months), none of the inks have faded, thought they have evaporated.

Wait... so they are out of the box but not where the sun shines directly on them?

And wow. Thats alot of ink. Im Brand new but already have a nice collection of 8 noodkers inks and a ton of samples.

So i should use one of my syringes to go from ink to vial then fill from vial and just add more to vial when it gets too low to fill out of?

Wont the syringe contaminate the bottle?

And how can it evaporate if its sealed? O. That not doesnt that mean there is air exchange and can grow mold?

Yiu seem to be a veteran and i dont mean to question your judgement, just want to know.

Thanks.

Question away.

Yes, they are mostly out of the boxes as you can see. They aren't in direct sunlight because here in Nevada that's just asking to ruin the furniture.

As for vials, I usually use a transfer pipette, but you could pour it from the larger bottle. Pipettes are cheap, so you can use one for each ink.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Oh, except for the inks that are part of the experiment. They are in bottles, unboxed and in the direct sunlight.

Ok. So if i use and ink syringe would that be ok too? I clean it everytime with my pen flush so there shouldnt be many contaminents.

So here is my cost effective way of showing my inks. Have a bunch more ink on the way but heres what i did....

I bought some wire mesh baskets for like 3 dol a piece. Screwed them to the wall with the only window in the room so it wont be in direct sunlight. If i run out of room i just buy more baskets and hang them!!

What do u think?

Lol im up to 19 bottles of ink!! Need more baskets already.

I made a pretty sweet color today by mixing 9 parts diamine poppy red and 2 parts bulletproof black.

Nice dark red/black.

  • 9 months later...

Excellent thread, thanks a lot. I have many inks that form a sediment after a week or so, so it was good to read your findings.
