Once again, fabulous review (Sandy1, your reviews should be a category in the ink review forum!). I love the color(s) of this ink, and I surely will try to get one bottle!

Hi,

Glad you liked the Review.

I think this ink has very many aspects / facets. If you succeed in getting a bottle, please chime-in with your experiences. It seems I've only scratched the surface. Whenever I use it, I'll try to remember to do a sample line or two.

Sandy, what a great review. You can get this at Art Brown or Swishers, and they plan to carry the Autumn lineup. Love the closeup of the letters showing the shading so well.

I can't remember the last time I have read what sounded like a 'gushing' promotion like this !!!

Many thanks for all the time you take putting these together. You make people think about inks in more ways than they knew...which increases our appreciation of them.

Of the ten inks that Ricky bought last Saturday, this is the one I picked to go back up to Maido to purchase for myself. These inks are intriguing!

Topnotch review, Sandy!

Maido in Japan-Town sells Sailor Seasonal Inks??!!?? Need to get up to the City ASAP!

Hi,

I'm glad you liked the Review!

I'm not quite sure of the "closeup of the letters showing the shading " you mentioned. I did some HiRes scans which are linked. The other is under the 'Paper' heading - that was actually intended to show the difference in paper tints. (The difference between HPJ1124 : Rhodia is apparent.)

Well, I certainly am enthusiastic about an ink that combines an excellent performance profile with a unique Look. Such inks are rather rare, so when I come across one such, my objectivity as a Reviewer does get a bit frayed around the edges. B)

I appreciate your remarks about my Reviews. I recall that someone somewhere sometime ago mentioned that ink is the blood of words. Likely a misquote or taken out of context. But that's pretty much the way I regard ink.

Also, when I do a Review, it gives me info that I want too. There's been a few inks that I've used for years on end that have served-up a few surprises when run though the Review process.

The Written Samples are set-up as a tool/guide : If one looks at the NIB-ism to determine the wet-dry and width of a nib, then looks at the written samples on different papers, they should have an idea of what pen & paper they might use for a certain Look with that ink. And sometimes the range of writers and papers exceeds an ink's performance profile, which is good to know.

Cheers!

Borrowing your image link, I meant this paper comparison, but which also demonstrates that nice shading effect.

This review helped persuade me to order two bottles from The Writing Desk before they ran out. I haven't been disappointed. This is a color I'd been thinking of mixing for myself since I hadn't found it anywhere else: part grey, part green, part brown. I'd like to keep writing with this forever -- so sorry it's LE.

Has anyone else seen staining with this ink? I received a bottle for Christmas and finally emptied my pen after a month or so. After cleaning, my converter was stained blue (see Sandy1's wet tests in the review - that color). I could probably clean it out with bleach but it's only a converter so I don't really care. Might be more of an issue with an ink window in a piston filler.

Otherwise I like the ink very much. Great color and behavior.

Hi,

Not like you describe, but I tend to clean the pen after writing whatever it was I had in mind for a given pen+ink combo.

(If I want to spend a bit of play time with an ink, I'll usually do that prior to writing - often when sampling-choosing the paper. OCD or what?)

Brand of converter?

(If I have one, I could just leave it sealed half full; not in a pen. And perhaps try 10% ammonia - not bleach.)

Many thanks for the heads up!

Oh well, so much for 'gentle'. (Will it nibble upon a Safari feed?)

I encourage others to chime in, especially if similar misbehaviour is noticed.

Bye,

S1

I believe it is a Schmidt converter. It is marked Trio (the pen is a Danitrio), but the converter looks identical to the Schmidts I have in other pens.

I filled the converter with 10% ammonia to see how easy it would be to remove the staining. A half hour soak didn't have much effect. I'll refill and leave overnight to see if that helps.

As S1 invited, I'd like to add a few words. My guess is that this ink should be looked at from the first moment the ink touches the paper to the moment it dried. The colors are very different from a moment to another, and looking at the ink drying is kind of fascinating. I know this is the case for most inks, but here seems to be a trick: the ink is designed to match tea color; japanese green tea, that is. The first moment of the color is a very shining and fresh green, a color youc an find in very young and fresh japanese tea leafs, as some high quality sensha or bocha teas or some mixed as hodju tea. Then, the color stats to change to a more terinsh green, matching the color of teas like the famous gyokuro tea. And finaly, when the color is completly dry, it takes a brownish tint not unlike some "burned" teas like hojicha.

Of course, the results are very different depending of nib and paper, like Sandy1's review clearly shows.

If I think it's interesting to look at that ink this way is because of some elements of japanese esthetics that takes time into account in a very different way than western's esthetic (sorry for the gross apoproximation), as you can see in the difference between comic's and mangas, and as, also, you can see in Tanizaki's "Eloge de l'ombre" ("Praize for the Shadows"?).

Thank you for describing what I was seeing so well. There is a majestic quality to this ink. It is hard to imagine that these effects are designed on purpose, but if any such mastery could be brought to the art of ink making, the Japanese would be the first ones I would expect to do it.

Update on the staining issue - it's not permanent (at least in my case). After the ammonia soak didn't help much, I cleaned out the converter and refilled it with a different ink. I just finished up that load and cleaned out the pen out today. The converter came out clear with no residual staining. I'm glad to see it, as rikyu-cha is one of my current favorites.

I've got 5ml sample of this color, and I am afraid of using it anymore b/c it's simply my most favorite!

I haven't seen any brownish green color even remotely like this!

It's a beauty both when it's wet and when it's dry...

I wish I can get a hold of the full bottle here is US.

It's a shame Sailor doesn't produce this limited edition ink anymorecrybaby.gif

I ordered several Sailor inks from pengallery in Malaysia last month, among others rikyu-cha and the legendary yama-dori. They stock all of them and I had them on my doorstep 3 days after ordering. Shipping costs are okay too. (no affiliation etc.)

have my order "pending shipment" for several days now at pengallery. this is disturbingly similar to what happened at swisher's. now to figure out how to cancel the order and maybe I'll try again at TWD?

I went searching for a US source for the lavender 'fuji musume'. Scottsdale Pen's site says they've got 3 of the colors... I placed an order and I'll let you know how it goes.
