I gave him a Menlo Pump Filler made of Tortoise Lucite. Just like this one...

He was giving a talk at Kent State, and I managed to hand it over as he was being ushered off stage. I was like a crazy fan-girl!

Oh that would be amazing! Anytime that I see a clip of him in his office, I'm pausing and dissecting every frame, looking for the Menlo!

This post from the NYT mentions that Dr. Tyson is actually big into calligraphy, which is even higher still on the oh-wow-that's-cool scale IMO . It also goes into a bit of detail about his wife buying him a pen as a present.

The author Neil Gaiman also signs books (and writes their first drafts) with various fountain pens. I've seen multiple pictures of his Pilot Custom 823.

 

I'm guessing if you have to sign thousands of books a day, a fountain pen (versus a ball point) is essential if you want to avoid major writer's cramp. I suppose that Tyson, being a scientist, is the sort of person you'd expect to have inquired into the question, and discovered the fountain pen solution.
