Inexpensive, high-quality celluloid FP??

It will probably be hard to beat Tryphon's Clef, but I agree with Meanwhile and Maja about vintage celluloid pens, especially the Sheaffer Balance. I love their striated pens, like this one below:

PS They are usually very reasonably priced, especially on ebay. However, they usually need a little nib work and a new ink sac (which is easy to replace). You could ask OldGriz if he has one for sale, or post a WTB in the marketplace.

Ron,

I agree: the best celluloid patterns can be found in vintage pens. Even some low cost pens , back in the 30s and 40s used truly beautiful materials: some of the patterns are just gorgeous.

Thanks for all the help, folks. Vintage could be the way to go and I do like the size of the Balances or possibly even with the Forever even though it is on the smallish side, when posted it's not too bad.

Tryphon, thank you for all of the helpful technical info! This is very interesting.

Hi Kelly,

You may want to check Regina Martini's site. She had a bunch of Stipula Novecento Rexes with her at the Tilburg pen show last Saturday, at extremely reasonable prices...

And yes, I couldn't resist....

Warm regards, Wim

You are very welcome!

The picture of the beautiful baby in your Avatar made me wish to post a picture of my little girl, who's a little over two months' old.

I hope our friends from the FPN won't mind this act of fatherly pride!!

Take care,

Giovanni

The picture in my avatar is old--he was probably 6 months old there, but he's now 15 months and striding about, saying all kinds of words, and generally giving the impression of being a very very charming talking monkey. It's really fun.

I just picked up a Retro 51 Double 8 at Paradise Pens in Las Vegas. It is a gorgeous green with silver trim. The Double 8 pens use Cellulose Acetate and most seem to seel for under $100.00
