Montblanc - Royal Blue

Recommended Posts

Sandy1 - you are so right - MB Royal Blue is the blue which you think you know, but in fact you don't.

There are wisteria and hyacinth notes lurking in its shading, and a vibrancy which Waterman Florida Blue doesn't have for me. Familiarity may breed contempt in this ink's case. If you want to pay more and have a Japanese firsson, then Sailor's Spring ink 'Nioi-Sumire' is a dead spit. Doesn't shade as well, though....

Hello John,

I very much agree with your remarks about vibrancy, and differences with the WFB. And the thing with familiarity is rife throughout the OOTT series. (You may find the OOTT Review of Pelikan RB of interest, especially some of the subsequent posts from other Members. LINK) It certainly raises the point of our insatiable thirst for new inks, when there are spectacular inks readily available.

And I especially agree that inks cannot be compared on colour alone - things like shading are soooo important when selecting an ink.

Bye,

Sandy, thanks for your review and help using Calibrize. I'm not computer illiterate, but on my lap top, I cannot find the file/property box to open to make the adjustments. It does not come up in Display Properties that I could find, unless dear old Micro Soft has hidden them deeply or put them in a counter intuitive place. as they do with many things.

What else do we have in life if not to help each other?

It is a fantastic ink - probably the best-behaved of the recent MB inks.

MB inks are not the most consistent inks (I'd give that title to Sailor in a heartbeat), but their colours... they just seem to nail my mental image of what each colour should be, treading that fine line between vibrancy and solemnity perfectly. Midnight Blues (blue-black), Lavender (purple), Royal Blue and, to a lesser extent, Irish Green are all my favourite shades in their respective colour ranges (even beating out my Iroshizukus for the most part)...

Anyway, enough of my waffling. Great review (and a great way with words)!

Too many pens; too little writing.

I'm just using my first fill of MBRB. I'm not overly impressed. It behaves well, but the color is so-so. It leaves me a bit flat. If you're looking for a great business-oriented, no-drama-whatsoever blue, this one is for you. Low risk, low reward, IMO.

I thought it might supplant Private Reserve American Blue as my (current) favorite blue, but it didn't.

Keep the reviews coming!

Loaded up the Jules Verne LE with this ink in January and have been very impressed.

(Much more impressed than I have been with other inks from that company...)

Hi,

Point taken. I very much agree that MBRB is a "no-drama-whatsoever blue".

To me, the 'no-drama' aspect is important, as that is what keeps the ink interesting : it is subtle, and has a lot of nuance. Those aspects should become apparent (even if not enjoyed) as it is used. It does not engulf the writer or the reader/s. As mentioned, it is 'under the radar'.

I too enjoy PR American Blue. To the extent that I have reviewed it twice! And have used it as a subject of ink dilution, and an extended four-way comparison. Links: Review One, Review Two, Dilution, Four-Way, and an OOTT Comparison - Montblanc Royal Blue :: Private Reserve American Blue Link. PRAB also had a cameo appearance in the mini-Review of Parker Penman Sapphire, Ink Link.

I do have a hard time picking one favourite ink: I have an array, so I take the approach that my favourite ink must be the one in the pen I am holding. Even this little project to show ten Blue inks has at times been mis-interpreted as the 'top ten'.

Cheers!

Hi,

Thanks for the encouragement!

I'm glad you are impressed with this one. Yet from Montblanc, their Midnight Blue is a stunner; but even more subtle, "When Sharon Stone wears YSL's Le Smoking, this ink is in her pen. http://gracemagazine...smoking-ysl.jpg"
