Waterman #78 Nib Replacement

Thinkpad

Recommended Posts

Hello,

So, I found this Waterman #78, but the nib is completely warped/destroyed.

Does anyone know where I might find a nib for it?

Since I doubt I'll even find an original nib for it, what are my options? Can I use another Waterman nib for this pen?

Thanks in advance :)

Although the nib might look really mangled, it can almost certainly be repaired - although not cheaply. John Mottishaw can pretty much fix anything wrong with a nib.

Did you buy the 78 on eBay? There is another thread below about this auction. If that is where you got it, you got a bargain - bad nib or not.

Mottishaw can do it, if you want to wait. Greg Minuskin is also very good, I had him repair some mangled Waterman nibs, and they look like new! He can even re-tip, and has a great turn-around time.

I'd check with both of them before committing...

Hi Grem,

Greg Minuskin here. I can assist you with your Waterman #8 nib repair. My turn around time right now is just 2 weeks. Please give me an email at greg@gregminuskin.com.

No, I didn't buy it at ebay, I found it at a flea market for 15 Euros.

After cleaning the nib, I noticed it wasn't an original Waterman nib.

I think it reads "C.. Française Boulogne 3/M".

The nib has been through a lot, it was completely black and one thine is shorter as well.

Not sure if it's worth repairing this nib.

Are there other nibs that I can install in this pen? (I know it's blasphemy, but I'm not paying $250 for an original nib)

Either way, here's some pics :)

When I said you might want to repair the nib, I was assuming it was a Waterman #8. The nib you have probably isn't worth repairing. If you are only wanting something that will write well, you can probably get a big steel nib that will work fine. Some good ones are made in Germany, I believe. It will have to be pretty large to fit properly I imagine.

If you ever want to sell the pen, however, it would probably be a good idea to get the correct nib. It looks like your pen has good chasing and color. If it is missing a clip, then it should be replaced. If it never had a clip, you don't need to bother. With the proper nib, this pen would probably bring $1000 on eBay, so the price of the nib would be easily recovered.

Thanks for the pics - that is a very nice and quite rare pen. :)

p.s. Hope I got the right emoticon this time. I hit the wrong one by mistake in my first post and didn't notice until it was too late to edit it.

Thanks, I think I'll put in a some temporary nib or store the pen away for the time being, till I find something that matches :)

I don't think it's missing a clip, I can only see the regular venting holes, but no holes where a clip might have been.

That last pic shows more dust than anything else because of the camera's flash. The pen is in good condition, it only has one big twisted scratch and that's at the end of the barrel. I think someone tried opening it with a sharp object thinking it's a plunger-filler or something. Not sure if that can be repaired.
