FPN Ink Label!!!!!!

I think Griz has wider set eyes - the true sign of  a preditor......

To the game at hand - deciding on a lebel. I think  the time for comment is over - 'those in charge' SHOULD take a decision and anounce it.

This is my opinion. Few things get done by splitting things to committee and taking 'one more pole'. One can sit and wait (a good way to get killed in combat), or face the decision and pervail.

Well, there is some very good work displayed in this thread. How long is the talk going on .... shall we discuss the type of table to have this decision taken on?

Ron

With any group you are going to get people who complain about things going too slow and then others about it going too fast.

And for heaven's sake this is day three including a weekend for this discussion.

I guess the only real question is how many bottles of ink are you going to buy??? :eureka:

Please note that the label development is NOT delaying the ink in any way. We are working on the order form similar to the FPN notepad form (have you ordered yours yet? You'll need something to use this ink on! And it's super high quality paper) oops, I'm crossing the line into Marketplace territory  The form should be ready VERY soon.

So, I'm estimating that we will be able to start taking orders quite soon.

At least two! ;)

Had a very, very hectic day at work so I'll leave the doodling to be for one evening. But I do want to thank you all for the compliments!

I suppose it's time to leave the "deciding"-part to the people who've already spent so much of their own time in making this ink available. Thanks ever so much!!

Best regards!

Ok, so the poll on restricting the development of the current label vs. keeping options open clearly show a preference for the current label.

This is my favorite. I'd like to see the Noodler's logo MUCH smaller, and perhaps it could be placed elsewhere. Nathan can probably do that.

Also, instead of "Noodler's Ink" in the title of the ink, it could be changed to Fountain Pen Network. Thus the layout:

Fountain Pen Network (in script)

Galileo Manuscript Brown (in script)

Hana's drawing

FPN logo (as shown)

www.fountainpennetwork (as shown)

with the Noodler's Ink logo VERY small, somewhere

Anyone up for a mockup like that?

One suggestion: "Fountain Pen Network" at the top should be smaller and in a different "hand" or style than "Galileo Manuscript Brown".

Having the latter in a calligraphic italic style that mimics Galileo's handwriting is a good idea. The "Fountain Pen Network" line would look best if it were in all capital letters in a Roman (e.g. Trajan's Column) style and not as high as the ink name. The Roman style will complement the calligraphy instead of competing with it.

If you do both lines in the same italic style it will look too "busy" and it will also look like the name of the ink is "Fountain Pen Network Galileo Manuscript Brown," which is quite a mouthfull as well as an eyefull.

Actually, that is the name of the ink. Perhaps "FPN Galileo Manuscript Brown" ?

Once we're agreed upon the final layout of the label (which seems to be the case) and if everybody's ok with it, I'll attempt to collect the necessary graphics in the highest resolution possible. Anyone got the logo in highres? ;)

I will use this draft as the basis:

http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l143/arcis1814/fpn_ink_label_04.jpg

In this image the first line should, if I understand correctly, be replaced with "Fountain Pen Network" in a relativy smaller script than the second line and it should contrast with that second line. Sounds like just the job for Hana! :D

Let's leave the placing of the Noodler's logo to Nathan. He'll know what to do with it best.

Well, if the name is that long, it's that long. Although with FPN/Fountain Pen Network, Fountain Pen Network logo, and www.fountainpennetwork.com all on the label this is starting to look like the Bureau of Redundancy Department was in charge of working out the wording. ;)

I would favor spelling out Fountain Pen Network if it is to appear on the label, rather than abbreviating the name. And even so, I would recommend using a different lettering style, in a smaller X-height, for the FPN name.

Just my opinion. Not like thousands of people are going to see this label in my ink stash, and I will buy and use the stuff even if it is called Professor Fudd's Magick Elixir and Ye Olde Browne Ynke.

I had trouble stifling my laughter when I read your last sentence. (I'm at the library!) :ltcapd: It came out like a sneeze.

I'm not just being lazy, but I think the "Fountain Pen Network" lettering should be typed with a different font, too. If the whole thing were to be handwritten, it might end up looking like a short sentence instead of an ink name.

What about using the font in the banner at the top of the page?

I can look up the font name if you like.

BTW, the official name of the ink is: FPN Galileo Manuscript Brown.

This name was chosen with the many other inks we had in mind, a limited edition ink each year or so . :ltcapd:

Hi Joska,

Just found it: Monotype Corsiva. It is a standard Windows font.

DON'T use Monotype Corsiva!

It's a bad knock-off of Professor Hermann Zapf's ITC Zapf Chancery Medium Italic w/ Swash Capitals (which is also too over-used). This has been bothering me for a while now.... Also don't use Book Antiqua, use Linotype Palatino for similar reasons.

If no one objects, I'll lay out what has been designed thus far, set the requested type (I'm thinking Waters Titling) or write it out myself and post something shortly.

Is there a vector source image for the FPN logo? If not I'll re-draw it, I've got ITC Anna.

I thought we were going with the beautiful hand lettering (modeled on Galileo's actual handwriting) for Galileo Manuscript Brown (?).

Linotype Palatino is exactly the typeface I had in mind for the "Fountain Pen Network" line -- I think it is a great complement to the calligraphy. Palatino is a font with very strong calligraphic roots.

I was choking back my comments on Monotype Corsiva, hoping that someone else would make them for me. Thanks! (And I wouldn't have gone for Zapf Chancery either.)

Yes, that's what I thought as well. The name of the ink "FPN Galileo Manuscript Brown" hand done by Hana?

I've enjoyed watching the lable evolution. It's come a long way in a short time.

Hi Will,

Sorry, but the blue band with white letters at the top of the board is in Monotype Corsiva, and I don't think we are going to change it any time soon.

The label is only available in bitmap type files, but we do have a few high res ones, so no need to redo.

You can call me boring, but I like the work Nathan Tardiff has done on the rest of the Noodler's labels, and I like to be suprised, so my vote is for plan C.

I certainly enjoy the label that's been evolving so far, but I will like the ink no matter what the label, so I will not vote--I'll leave the votes for those who have a strong preference.
