FPN Ink Label!!!!!!

Dear long suffering FPN inkless members,

We are very close to taking orders for FPN Galileo Manuscript Brown. We have just a few shipping issues to tackle. While the ink is brewing we would like to solicit input on the label. Therefore we are mulling over the following:

Plan A. The following pictures/paintings were proposed. If we could get a definitive answer on whether or not they are public domain, we could vote on one of them. Any help on this matter would be appreciated.

Portrait of Galileo by Sustermans

The Trial, by Banti:

Galileo teaching Viviani, by Lessi :

Unknown artist, found on generic site about Galileo:

Galileo's recantation:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v12/elainepnj/Pens/FPNink/recantation.jpg

Plan B. We have some very talented artists amongst the membership. If anyone would like to submit original artwork for the label, we could make that a contest. (The winner gets, uh, let's see, some ink?).

The label needs to include:

1. name of ink

2. Noodler's name

3. www.fountainpennetwork.com

and remember that Galileo is the theme.

Plan C. Or we could just leave the label up to Nathan Tardif giving him the same criteria as in B.

This is the thread to respond to. Please give input!

I like the Sustermans' portrait, but I'm open to original work from the network membership.

If someone has access to a photo of Galileo, I could try to sketch a portrait. ;)

Good luck finding a photo. Galileo lived and died long before photography.

Here is another possibility, but one that I am sure won't "fly" -- it's an artist's conception of the Galileo probe after launch from the Galileo orbiter, descending through the atmosphere of Jupiter on 7 December 1995. The colors are nice, though, and might look as good on a label as the portrait of Galileo himself.

I vote for Galileo teaching Viviani, by Lessi, though I'm not sure how that will come across on an ink bottle.

So if you have a lot of ink,

You should get a Yink, I think.

Rather than a portrait, I could envision an example of his writing.

The Banti and Lessi paintings are so detailed as to be unintelligible by the time they were reduced to the size needed for a label. From the four options offered, the black & white pen & ink drawing would be the easiest to reproduce though somewhat boring. The Susterman's portrait might be the most appealing though cost would have to be considered.

Alternative ideas are intriguing. A contest among members would be particularly interesting though the idea for use of Galileo's own penmanship deserves consideration.

Were a contest to be offered, the Galileo space probe idea would certainly deserve consideration from among participants.

My recommendation: the contest.

To make this a true endeavor both for and of FPN participants, the contest offers the greatest opportunity for the imagination.

What is the full name of the ink? "FPN Galileo Manuscript Brown" or just "Galileo Manuscript Brown"?

Oh dear, I forgot one of the suggestions from way back when:

For those who are interested in using one of the paintings (I'm not sure the size would be a problem, we're not expecting total clarity) we need to find out if we can legally use them.

I'm adding it here as well as editing the original post

Thank you Beaker606 for reminding me of it.

If you can get it on a label the Lessi Painting is great.

I'd prefer a reference to the original rather than the spacecraft.

I like the Sustermans portrait.

I also prefer "Galileo Manuscript Brown" to "FPN ..."; it's just more general.

By the way, will this ink be made available to retailers?

My vote is for the example of his writing.

Thanks for making this happen. I look forward to purchasing this ink soon, no matter what the label looks like!

Nope, it will be a FPN exclusive, sold only through this site.
