I have a question about this barrel. Is this a true demonstrator, or simply a pen from which the paint has been worn or removed?

From what I can see - the threads at the blind cap end is yellowish. I believe the dark paint will cover this part and there is no way any paint remover or worn can keep these threads all yellowish without dark tint.

Also, I cannot see any leftover stripes or dark paint on the inside of the barrel. I'm quite satisfied that the barrel was not originally painted dark.

Edit: For the sceptics, a shot of the barrel near the blind cap.

A 1st generation resin 149 with a 14C OB

Looks beautiful! How does it write? Line variation, springy nib?

I have a 1955 MB 146 with 14C OB nib and might like to add something comparable in 149-size, or writer's edition.

I am still awaiting the pen's arrival from Germany. I'll post as soon as I get it.

I too have a 1950s 146. Mine has a 14c 3B nib. The 149 was advertised as having a "1950s" nib. I am anxiously waiting to see how it writes...

That's what I think as well. I saw those pens in real life and pens with removed or faded black look different. Those most likely were never painted/tinted black.

We can only assume if they were meant to be "official demonstrator pens" but they were clearly produced this way skipping the blackening.

...anyways it is a wonderful pen.

Cheers

I got a long ink window 136 with a receipt from 1941 which came from the same store and shows the same handwriting as Kai's :cloud9:

Cheers

Michael

beautiful photos Michael.

In terms of conversion how is this?

The beautiful 136 was 25RM and the lovely L139 was 41RM- that is only about 50% more.

Now it is about 300% more for a good 136 vs a good 139- the 139's were a good buy back then

I just snagged a Thomas Mann with a broad nib off the classifieds from Bryant, as well as a 146 (M). Yay!

And Bryant is shipping me a Montblanc 3-42G with a "with medium stub like flex nib" which appears to have loads of line variation. Also found on the classifieds.

I just bought a MB silver solitaire rollerball (new, unused apparently) from our mutual enabler Bryant.

He wouldn't budge on price!

It's intended as a present so I'm afraid I don't expect to be able to keep it long.

Traded to get a ca. 1960-70 No. 9 nib, EF semi-flex long-shouldered, already tuned up and tipped by Greg Minuskin. It'll either go into my early 1960s 149 or another period 149 that I'll hunt for.

I know, off topic, but since it is a FPN-pen, I took the freedom to mention it here: just purchased my first Stipula, the blue celluloid, silver trim FPN limited edition with a 1.1. italic nib. Can't wait to try this pen. I held an Erturia in the Santa Fe pen shop and it felt great. Seems to be in the 149 size.

If you can say that it will live next to your MBs and be nice, then it's not too far off topic!

After 5 and a half months of waiting, I received my graduation present to myself! This 18c nib was in rough shape before I sent it off to John to have it transformed into the 1.2mm oblique beauty you see before you. 1.2mm is pretty similar to my 344 OBB, so I will classify it as an OBB. It is a crisp writer and has excellent line variation. Unfortunately for all the purists out there, this is a bit of a Frankenstein pen. I picked up the busted 60s 149 at an estate sale for pennies, had montblanc make me a new pen with the 60s nib, and then sent it off for some serious work courtesy of John. However, it is an excellent addition to my small collection of Mont Blancs. I have my eyes set on a 14c nib for my next acquisition.

It has arrived! Lovely little pen, looks very nice and seems flexible indeed. No ink with me today (except for what's in the MB 146 but I don't feel like making a wine-red inky mess at work) so will have to wait a little before trying it out.
