We'd be happy to have her. Other parents have their children on here as it gives a shared experience they can enjoy together.

She's joined. Her pen name is "Celluloid" and here she is with our saviour at Visconti:

Best... story... EVER!!!

I look forward to seeing both you and her on FPN. She's got great taste, by the way... Hard to beat the Homo Sapiens. Tough pen, too.

Yesterday my 7 year old daughter and I were in Florence and chose to drop in to the Visconti shop. There we were met by a lovely older gentlmen with limited English who helped us look at the Visconti's - all beautifully laid out and impressive as would be expected. As Visconti is a Florentine brand, we thought (OK, I thought) this would be a good idea.

My daughter unfortunately, has an eye for pens. And her eye was for the Homo Sapien - a touch big (and expensive) you would think for a 7 year old.

From there it was serious negotiation. She really wanted it. It's too big. No bigger than my Delta (we bought her a Delta in Ivory acrylic earlier on the trip). It's too expensive. But you buy expensive pens for yourself. But I earn the money. I can too. OK, how about I buy it for myself (yes, I'm crumbling at this point) and you can have it when you turn 15 (TEARS).

Poor Mr Visconti (foolishly I didn't get his name) is very concerned about my daughter. She sounds here like a spoilt brat (a little spoilt yes, but not a brat and much more subtle). He tries to show her it's too big for her - but she then demonstrates perfect writing balance and pressure. He tries to show her reasonable alternatives, she rejects them (she has seen the HS elsewhere and still likes it). Finally, he reduces the price; I compromise and say it's mine until she's 9 - deal.

Deal done, Mr Visconti is so releaved for all of us that he closes his shop, takes us down the street and buys my daughter an ice cream and me an espresso. He explains he is a grandfather, but has never seen a child so want a fountain pen. Post coffee and ice cream, we return to the shop, meet his wife who has arrived with a little shopping and is regaled by her husband with the story.

This is why we take holidays: for the experiences that take us to places and people we may not see day-to-day.

We will be writing to Mr Visconti - with our Homo Sapien - to thank him again for his patience, style and generosity. The pen is indeed well named. Mr Visconti was a warm and gentle human being.

Great story!

Heck no--with her skills, she's going to get a fabulous job that pays tons of money and she'll buy her own pens!

I came here for the pictures and stayed for the conversation.

From Melbourne to Florence and back with two pens in her pack!

She sounds fabulous.

Maybe see her at the pen show??

The Homo Sapiens is a wonderful pen. The nib, stunning and unbelievable.

I wouldn't even dare to try such a pen.

Hi Allegra!

You done good! as they say these days. Keep it up and your dad and you will have a fab fountain pen collection to share until 'you're old enough'. Sounds like a good deal for both of you!

Hope to see you again at the Melbourne Pen Show.

Nicholas, maybe you can set your daughter to work at the Pen Show by setting her up with a stall!

Thanks for a great story. My 10 year old daughter can be just as insistent but luckily it has been directed towards a pink Lamy Safari and a Kaweco Sport pen and pencil set. A few days ago she suddenly understood flexible nibs I can see a battle developing unless I can find a pen with a cheap flexible nib.

Why not?

Because maybe Nickolasyeo will like it so much, he'll want to buy one?!? Then again, there's also the chance that the person may be disappointed by the pen (as I was) or find it really doesn't suit his/her tastes, thereby one is freed from the any desire to own one.

That is true. But from the looks of it, a 23K nib, called "Dreamtouch"?

I might just blow all the money I have in my bank account and my parents would kill me.

Hey eric47, why were you disappointed with the pen? I've never handled one, but I looked it up and this pen looks really beautiful and tempting!
