Fountain Pens In Movies And Tv

In an episode of the recent BBC series Sherlock. Sherlock Holmes deduces that the writing on a note was done by Parker Duofold. I think he might be a little more specific than that but I'm not sure. Pretty impressive from just the writing.

You don't see the pen but he mentions the pen by name.

From "Sherlock: Series 1, Episode 3, 'The Great Game.'"

Sherlock: Nice stationary... Bohemian.

Lestrade: What?

Sherlock: From the Czech Republic. No fingerprints?

Lestrade: No.

Sherlock: She used a fountain pen. Parker Duofold... iridium nib.

This is one of my favorite series (can't wait for the second season to be available on Netflix).

Anyone else ever watched "I Walk Alone", 1948 noir thriller with Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas and Lizabeth Scott? Probably the only movie ever where fountain pens are integral to the plot! Watch on Netflix streaming and see how "the (fountain) pen is mightier than the sword snub-nose .38!"

Also Deniro was in Casino where someone was stabbed to death in the neck with a fountain pen (what a way to go)

I wonder if the nib would have been damaged?

Maybe a sharp italic was used... :headsmack:

Searched topic for TOPSY-TURVY (1999) but not there! D'oyly Carte hands Sir Arthur Sullivan a fountain pen; he stares at it not understanding (where's the ink!). DC explains "It's a fountain pen; it has it's own ink inside."

Your portrait of Commander Bond not only shook me to recall but also stirred me that in the early Bonds like Dr No ,"M" uses a Parker 51 as do other characters in the early 007 movies. In the later ones there are the Mont Blancs, one having a lethal surprise. I have actually had the pleasure of holding the gold Mont Blanc used by Roger Moore as 007 ( as well as Clara Petucci' and Ernest Hemingways pens).

best wishes

Edith Wharton's House of Mirth with Gillian Anderson as Lily Bart. There are glimpses of fountain pens through it but at the end, just before she commits suicide, Lily takes out a fountain pen and writes a check and addresses an envelope. Scratchiest pen ever. Scritch. Scritch, Scritch. Makes your hair stand on end! I am sure it is for the effect but really awful if you are a fountain pen enthusiast.

If I recall Burt Lancaster's character smashes a Parker Duofold ( areal one ..cringe...) used by Wendell Corey, and later Burt purchases a Parker 51 from a drug store , sold not even in a box but from a card of pens (oh that good fountain pens were that cheap today), and later gives it to Wendell Corey. It has been a long time since I saw it, quite a violent film for the era.

Deadwood, opening scene of the series, inside the jail, the (soon to be ex) sheriff uses a dip pen.

What a great scene - set the tone of the entire series, and defined Bullock's character. Great show! Cancelled too soon.

I've been in Hugo Cabret lately and in the final scene the little girl is writing with a pen - I was concentrating more on the plot than wanting to know which pen she uses.

But if you want to have a look at a vintage pen in a movie, go ahead :-)

Greetings,

Michael

In Casablanca, Ric (Humphrey Bogart) writes "OK" on a chit with a Faber Castell pencil (probably indelible) which has the silver cap on it.

In the outdoors series The Story Of Dick Proenneke he's shown keeping his daily journal with a fountain pen. Looks like a sheaffer maybe?

Seen on PBS...Alone in the Wilderness...the story of Dick Proenneke, who built

his own cabin and lived in the Alaskan wilderness for almost 30 years. I spotted

him writing in his journal... using...a Sheaffer WD posted pen...which could have been a snorkel

or touch-down.

I saw the brand new movie “The Grey”, at the beginning the hero writes a letter to his wife using a Lamy (I guess). Anyone saw the movie?

While watching Downton Abbey, I was on the edge of my seat when Lord Grantham took out a pen while trying to bribe the chauffeur not to marry his daughter. Actually, he was going to pay him off with a check. It was difficult to get a good look, but to be honest, it looked like a Parker 51 - metal cap, dark (plastic?) pen body. Maybe I saw it incorrectly, but my first thought was, "There were no 51s in 1919!"

Anyone else get a good look? I'll have to watch the DVD in slo-mo to get a better look.

Just read through all of this hoping to find out what pen Kermit uses is the new The Muppets movie... I didn't see the movie, but my girlfriend did, and she mentioned it. I couldn't find a clip of the scene anywhere...

edited to add that someone did mention the same sighting earlier in the thread though
