78g Review - Black Broad Nib

I have one 78G F Black presently and a 78G M Teal Green along with another Black F in the mail that should be arriving in the next couple of weeks. $9.99 per pen shipped from Ebay seller pokydady (no affiliation, just the price and where I got it from as an option to consider for future readers). I should have ordered a B but thought I ruined the first F so wanted to replace it.

I let my first Black F Pilot 78G dry out for about a year and it distorted the sac pretty badly (foolish of me I know...bad newbie). I thought I ruined the pen. Last night, for the first time, I took the pen entirely apart and soaked all the parts in warm, soapy water. The rubber sac did not entirely come back to shape but it came back enough to suck up some ink and it's writing again. I was both surprised and very happy.

I absolutely love these pens and cannot wait for the M to arrive and will be giving the B a go in the future.

Thanks for the great review.

These are great pens for an awesome price. I've got a B and a M. I usually use mine to test ink samples, so there's always one filled with something on my desk. Reminds me, I think I need another...

One of the best items I've found for smoothing a nib is a 3 or 4 sided nail buffer that you can pick up in any drugstore. You work from the "roughest" grit to the finest and when you're done, the nib glides across the paper like it's ice skating (I've got 2 Pilot 78G B's and they are fabulous writers now).

The 2 Pilot 78G pens I ordered, arrived today. I've inked one of the two and I agree with watch_art ... I'm not impressed. Actually, I'm disappointed. Although i prefer heavier pens, I knew this would be a light weight pen, so that was no surprise. What was a surprise, was the nib. I ordered a broad nib, but this doesn't write like any broad nib I've ever used. The pen doesn't write very smoothly and the corners of the nib are sharp and could probably cure someone from allowing the nib to roll a bit, when it tears the paper.

While it's true ... this is a very inexpensive pen, it doesn't carry the name of an unknown. I think Pilot should care about all of their pens enough to pay attention to the nibs. If someone knew what they were doing, the nib could probably be greatly improved, but I can't help but wonder ... is a pen that carried a less than $10 price tag, worth what it would cost to have the nib worked on?? Guess it depends on how much you love the pen and if someone would even be willing to bother with it. LOL

Please excuse the lousy picture, but I can't get it to come out any better with my cell phone. I'm going to have to get a decent camera some day!

After reading through this topic, I must admit my curiosity of this pen. I usually only write with Western F nibs, but I have been wanting to experiment with stubs/italics. Not too keen on the filling mechanism though. Will cartridges or converts fit? I use eye droppers as a last resort.

It comes with a squeezy converter fitted, but it takes Pilot cartridges as well.

I made a boo-boo..

was seeking the same italic effect of the nibs on the squid shaped Pilot Plumix, no clip..

which, in Target is either fine or medium.. so I selected fine, and medium on my 78G's.. reading here it was the same nib.. not.. it must be the B? or there is a BB?

Wondering if I can swap out one of the smooth Plumix nibs, and insert in the 78G? Has anyone tried this?
