Rose Marbled Montblanc Monte Rosa #4 Lf/mp Set

I had the good fortune to find this on the bay the other week.

It's a rare marbled Monte Rosa with non too subtle design leanings on the Waterman Patrician.

 

As a Montblanc and Waterman fan I feel its done a pretty good job of combining the best of both worlds!

I love the flexible very large No 4 nib and the quirky clip and lever design. The cap band needs no mention - gorgeous!

It's a pretty rare set and I thought MB Fanciers would like to see it, most of whom will never have seen one before.

I have only seen one before, in green marbled (pen alone).

I don't know all that much about this model but the design is clearly 1930s. My guess is they were just a bit too closely modelled on the Patrician and MB pulled the line before Waterman came knocking on their door. (Or maybe they did and demanded they cease production?) This is also presumably the reason why they chose to make such a good quality pen under the economy Monte Rosa brand - so if design infringement was lodged against Monte Rosa - this would not undermine Montblanc's good name.

 

The thing is Montblanc's very first pen, the Rouge et Noir was itself very closely modelled on the Moore Safety pen so blatantly taking designs from other companies was not something new for Montblanc. On the other hand, the sheer diversity of Montblanc's inventory makes other German pen manufacturers of the time such as Pelikan look staid and anachronistic.

Nice pens indeed, especially these Patrician inspired set. But without wanting to disappoint you: this is definately not a Montblanc and not a Waterman set either. It's just a "Monte Rosa", a lower middle class brand from Switzerland which disappeared afaik during the 1940th. At that time Montblanc had nothing to do with this Swiss brand.

Thank you again for your input ! The pen set was sold to me as a Montblanc (?) by a German antiques dealer.

 

The lettering and mountain logo do both resemble closely the design of Montblanc as well and the quality is very good (there is nothing middle level about it!)

 

If Monte Rosa were a Swiss manufacturer then that is completely ok as I did not pay a terrible amount of money for it and it is of course a wonderful set that I intend to keep for many years!

 

What is more, it looks great next to my mint Waterman Patrician in Moss Agate !
