this is my work journal moleskine and noodlers black

Beautiful. I occasionally do something similar at home, although I found that I'm not very good at daily entries. Sometimes entire weeks or months are missing.

What pen are you using? (I would guess there is a Waterman 52 to the left of the journal and perhaps a Platinum Music on top?)

journaling / tinkering with pens / sailing / photography / software development

Great idea for a thread! It's nice to see what goes into other journals, and how. I fell out of the habit of journaling at the beginning of Summer, so I transcribed a poem to get back into it.

I really do need to learn how to write like that! I really like that penmanship, superb indeed! :)

In compare to the creative entries passed this topic, this is a really simple one. But for me a quote with a meaning.

I'm sorry for my writing skills!

I post my journal pages every day on my blog (milpreve.tumblr.com). I'm not always the most creative, and my handwriting is so-so, but I enjoy posting daily as a motivator to do each page justice. :) I use the Hobonichi Techo, a Japanese planner that is used for so much more. If you click through, there is an info section.

This is probably my favorite page. :)

In the past year or so I've radically changed my journal format. For a while I was drawing a text box (using the formula prescribed by medieval architect Villard de Honnecourt) on each page and also penciling in each line. I've seen medieval manuscripts like that and it seemed nice and tidy. But the lines take away from having to use skill and judgement while writing and it seemed too easy. Also too time consuming. Plus, the narrow inside margin proved to be an impediment on those rare occasions when I wanted to scan something I had written.

So I reversed the Honnecourt formula and put the wide margin on the inside. Also, instead of penciling in the entire text box AND each line, I'd pencil in the upper margin and inside margin and leave the other two sides of the text box blank. I need to use spatial imagination to guide me as far as line straightness, spacing, and text orders.

I use a piece of paper with the border corners holed so I can mark the spot with a pencil then draw the top margins and inside margins thus:

The bottom and outside margins lie only in imagination:

Of course, it's quicker to draw two lines per page than around 50, so it encourages more off-the-cuff writing, which is certainly a good option to have:

I also moved the day/date/time indicators, and part of the date and the first line of a paragraph are the only elements that protrude from the (drawn or imaginary) borders. Actually, I use a ragged right margin so some words stick out a bit. I still haven't completely remembered the rules for hyphenation.

But back to day/date/time. I use a numerical yymmdd-day code with 1 being Monday and 7 being Sunday. Today, which is Wednesday, February 19, 2014 would be written 140219-3. I write the date for every new entry for a particular day, and the time for every entry during a particular day.

Oh, and I put all days that appear on a particular page in the upper outside corners to make searching for a particular day easier.

I wish I could draw. I'm going to try to learn this year, in which case the format should become more graphical. That would really frost my cake!

OMG, who needs to "draw" when he can produce works of art like your journal?! if it wouldn't invade your privacy, could you take a more zoomed-in photo?

My life is full of mistakes. They're like pebbles that make a good road.

Haha. I deresolved the photo of the completed entry to obscure personal details. Not that there is anything all that interesting in my journal, but journals being what they are make comments about the day and about the people I've interacted with etc.

Thanks for your comments! My older method of using the straight Honnecourt format and drawing each line resulted in a nicer page -- perhaps "medieval" in appearance. But for journaling, this format is where I am now and is the best for my purposes so far.

HDoug, I have admired your handwriting, pens and ink from afar since first stumbling upon this wonderful forum :notworthy1:

Like egretsrus said, your written work is art. :happyberet:

Here are a few shots of my daily prayer journal, including the first page of today's entry. When writing in my prayer journal I am not generally focused on my handwriting. It is more notes before my prayer time so I quickly jot down ideas, requests, things I am thankful for, etc.

When I read the title, I thought "now why would he want to see a pix of an accounting journal entry?"

Only something that an accountant or bookkeeper would understand.
