Let's See Your Watermarks

This is a Liver Bird, the logo of Liverpool John Moores University, used as a watermark on its stationery.

And this is the watermark from some hand made paper that I bought from Wookey Hole Mill in Somerset over 25 years ago.

Anyone else like watermarks? Show your watermarks here.

Here's the long discontinued Crane's 100% cotton Distaff Linen. The color is actually a nice off white which doesn't come out in the photo, but you can at least see the interesting watermark and laid lines. Enjoy.

I LOVE watermarks! And I always enjoy holding a nice piece of paper. I usually receive paper with watermarks only from City law firms, and usually it is accompained by a big bill...

I think the first is from Strathmore. The Gilcrest is from Gilbert Paper Co. Used to sell their line about 30 yrs ago so don't know if they're still in existence

A couple more to seed the thread

Southworth Credentials 25% cotton antique laid

Crane's Crest 100% cotton laid.

Here's the drawing of it first

I have stationery made about 15 yrs ago in Crane's Crest. Absolutely wonderful paper, but in my opinion absolutely horrible for fountain pens. ALL my pen/ink combinations feather like crazy. Something about the tooth of the paper.

Is it still made?? Don't see it listed on Crane's stationery website, so the above may be the reason why.

I do not know if this is a watermark--it is embossed in the corner of this beautiful bristol board i just bought--so nice to draw on. I love Strathmore paper. Wish they made a moleskine type book.

That's nice! I use a personal embosser on my letters:

Actually, that's the Kimberly-Clark logo in the 1st one. The very same folks who make ANOTHER type of paper... typically found on a roll in the WC!

Thanks OPG, but doesn't that look like Gilerest rather than Gilcrest?

YEP, you're absolutely right. They used to also have mills dedicated to fine paper; whether they still do or not I don't know.

Alecgold in another thread also complained of Crest, see discussion which starts with post #41 in this thread: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php?/topic/163679-crane-papers/page__st__30

I haven't had any problems with 100% Crest,24 and 28lb in either laid or wove finishes. The difference in experience might be related to deterioration of paper, the effect of the elements such as humidity, or different cotton content. And yes Crane's Crest is still offered on their website in different weights, colors, finishes, and sizes. The 100% cotton line of Crest is one of my favorites.

Blade Runner, the newer Crane's Thesis paper (it's probably not even the most recent type) is smoother and apparently less FP-friendly than its previous incarnation even though both contain 25% cotton. The really old blue watermark is from Crane's Raveledge Vellum Bluite.

Glad you like the stripes on the Eaton's Air Mail paper!

The current thesis is 100% cotton, 24lb, archival quality, so perhaps you have another version?

Oh wait, I wasn't looking at the packages when I wrote that they were made of 25% cotton. Both are 100% cotton and archival (weights are "medium weight" and "standard weight"). On the packaging for the newer one, it states, "New smoother surface for improved copier performance." The watermarks are nearly identical.

Mmm I had some from my company, and Southworth's 100% cotton.. hmm, thats about it (the ones I actually use).

Im curious if theres any manufacturer that could make personalized watermarks for a "cheap" price.

what is the price for 100% cotton watermarks paper ~? I just want to know what kind of expensive it is ~~ TKS~~

Staples carries the Southworth line so you can browse the prices. Here are two links:

Southworth's 100% cotton - 20 lb. paper

Southworth's 100% cotton - 32 lb. paper

Here's some cotton paper that they use to make old ledger books in churches and town halls in Germany. It comes in very large sheets so I've learned how to divide it and get natural deckle edges, unless someone wants an EPIC letter from me that will take them several days to read =)

  • 1 year later...

A rather boring one considering the sender. The envelope was conqueror, not sure if the paper matches.

I have nothing as important as a sheet of paper from Buckingham Palace - great stuff though, as you suggest, they might have done a little more with the watermark. Here are two from some older paper (corporate minute books from the 1960s and 1970s) I use from time to time:
