Let's See Your Watermarks

Blade Runner

Thank you Blade Runner and JBB. I don't know that I have the photography technique down for photographing these as well as you both do, but here are two Amalfi watermarks:

I love those Amalfi watermarks. Thanks for posting them Rena. Here's some old Southworth's that has the blue ruling lines sometime printed on typing paper besides a watermark.

Rena, Nice examples of Amalfi! Thanks for sharing. Watermark factoid - first use of watermarks occured in Italy in late 13th century.

Jbb, Interesting blue lines. Haven't seen that.

Cheers

I love seeing all these watermarks!! When is was a kid, I used to save my money to get Hallmark stationery because it used to have watermarks. I always look for the watermark so it is face up when I am writing a letter. Sometimes I trim full sheets of paper to monarch size, but I always make sure i don't cut off any watermarks.

Blade Runner--those colored papers with watermarks are beautiful!!!

P,

Glad you like them! Here is one you may recognize, Crest Crest recycled 100% cotton. It's similar to the Crane's Crest shown before, but the recycled version uses up to 30% cotton scraps that have been dyed, so the sheet is a bit darker than Crest, and of course the watermark is different. J

This example isn't so distinct, but here's a Strathmore

It's always fun to share watermarks! Some of you have posted some nice watermarks, so here are a couple of mine.

From some Waverley stationery (made in Scotland):

I had no idea until recently that Hallmark used to have watermarks on their paper. Imagine my surprise when I found this vintage gem with matching envelopes:

These are terrific Ehoh. Is the Crane's Thesis paper old or current? Love that watermark!

Thanks, Blade Runner! You have great watermarks, too! The Crane's Thesis paper is an older one, but I do have a newer one with a nearly identical watermark. The paper itself has changed, though.

From some vintage Eaton's air mail onion skin paper (there are stripes down the side and the words, "Air Mail" on the bottom). The translucence is why it is hard to read:

Okay, here are my last couple of watermarks.

From a random stack of old paper:

And this indistinct one is from a really old box of Crane paper. I saved this one for you, Blade Runner, because I've noticed you are a big fan of Crane & Co. :

Thanks Ehoh!! You're right, I'm a big fan of Crane's.:cloud9: You must tell all about that last Cranes :puddle: And you mentioned Crane's Thesis has changed. Could you elaborate? I also love the blue and red racing stripes on the Eaton Air.

Blade Runner, the newer Crane's Thesis paper (it's probably not even the most recent type) is smoother and apparently less FP-friendly than its previous incarnation even though both contain 25% cotton. The really old blue watermark is from Crane's Raveledge Vellum Bluite.

Glad you like the stripes on the Eaton's Air Mail paper!

The current thesis is 100% cotton, 24lb, archival quality, so perhaps you have another version?
