Parker Duofold Black Mosaic

Roderico,

Congratulations on your new pen. It looks great and it being a classic duofold should give you many years of writing. If there is a weakspot in the modern duofolds it is: (1) the rate of ink return to the nib is fine if you do not write fast or use too many flourishes. This is not a problem with the duofold itself, but a characteristic of cartridge convertor type pens. If you write deliberately and do not do the flourish thing there is no issue; and (2) the section can work itself loose such that it begins to spin free around the threaded part making it difficult to twist it off the barrel for filling. Have encountered this infrequently though (on two out of about a dozen modern duofolds), so it is entirely possible this will not be an issue.

Overall, I very much like the duofolds as they are extremely user friendly, easy to service on your own, and nearly bulletproof with only the two issues I found above.

As another long time poster has said, your pen mileage may vary.

Thank you for your thorough review!

I was browsing these reviews and wanted to take a peek at yours. Then, I noticed that I have the exact same pen. A friend wanted to get rid of some pens, so he was nice enough to give me several pens including a Centennial Mosiac just like yours. I had the M nib reground to a stub by Pendleton Brown, and I've been so pleased with it's performance. I've been using Iroshizuku ink (asa-gao), and it flows so well. I have to re-fill it fairly often, but it is a small price to pay for such a fine instrument that writes so well for so long. Like you, I can write for a while and not get tired .

Thank you again for sharing your review. I'm glad you broke into the Parker market.

The nibs are stiff and the flow is dry, I have one 2002 centennial which is a huge disappointment, I will never buy a modern Parker ever again.

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

Unquestionably, everyone has his own experience with each fountain pen. I understand you. Those modern Duofolds aren't perfect, but I can't complain about my Black Mosaic. Nervertheless, now I can compare it with my Sailor KOP and... That's a nib!

While the nibs are firm, I've found the flow to be good on more than 10 Centennials I've had....

I'd bet yours just needed either cleaning or some adjustment.....

FWIW, I've had pens from all the other well known brands and some were fine out of the box and some needed some cleaning and adjustment....but that doesn't mean the entire brand is bad, just because a pen needs some adjustment....

Just my 2 cents, as we say..... ;)
