Parker Duofold Black Mosaic

Recommended Posts

Hi from Catalonia! This is my first review and I'll try to do my best.

I'd like to say some things about my Parker Dufold Black Mosaic, which was my first pen after the Montblanc's era (my first four pens were all Montblanc until I decided to try another brand). After a period of looking for a good pen, I decided to by a Parker for a sentimental reason. In the shop I asked for a Duofold Check Centennial, but then I saw the Black Mosaic model and I fell in love with it. The pen had a Medium nib. As I preferred the Extra fine, the seller changed it without problem, although I didn't know that it was a limited edition.

1. Appearance & Design: 8/10 This model is not ostentatious, but I find it very modern and classic at the same time, always beautiful.

post-33908-099459300 1281536986.jpg

2. Construction & Quality: 6/10 It seems well manufactered and with a simple and durable construction. Nevertheless, one day while I was writing the tassie or derby of the cap fell down and I had to fix it with glue. I was disappointed because I never thought that could happen with a pen like that.

post-33908-035881100 1281536997.jpg

3. Weight & Dimensions: 9/10 For my hands the Centennial Duofold is perfect. It could be bigger, but is very confortable to write hours and hours without being tired. Well balanced, I use It always caped.

post-33908-049843400 1281537012.jpg

4. Nib & Performance: 7/10 As I have said, the original pen had a Medium nib. I asked the seller to change it for an Extra fine nib and I could try out three or four nibs. I am pleased with the one I chose. It never leaks (I was afraid it could leak because all my MB leak), it always writes and has a good flush of ink. The only problem is that is a bit scratchy. But I know that an Extra fine nib may be a little scratchy and I prefer that than a Medium nib or a Fine nib which normally will write wider than It should be for me.

post-33908-058960700 1281537031.jpg

5. Filling System & Maintenance: 8/10 Simple: cartridge or converter. I like de piston filler pens, but I must recognize that the big cartrigde are very confortable, clean and easy to use. The pen is also easy to clean and maintain.

6. Cost & Value: 6/10 I bought the pen in Toulouse (France) and I paid for it 555 €, which I think it is too much, especially because I didn't know it was a limited edition. So, as I changed the original nib, the pen lost a big part of his value.

post-33908-012344900 1281537022.jpg

7. Conclusion: Final score 7/10 The Parker Duofold Black Mosaic is a good pen. I write with it every day and I love his design. For me it is a very good writer and I'm convinced that the Duofold pens are good writes and justify their fame. It is not perfect: too expensive and with a little problem about construction (the cap). I would probably buy a Duofold again, but perhaps I'd try a regular edition, cheeper and as well done as the Mosaic. So I recommend the Duofold pens, not that one.

Thank you for a good review.

I have been using Duofold Centennials since Parker started making them (again?) in 1989. I think the size and weight of the pen model is excellent, and the writing qualities of the model are equally good. I have found that the Duofold italic nibs are some of the best factory italics I have seen, so most of my Centennials have them. I have two LE's with M nibs that also write flawlessly. I cannot speak to the quality of the EF or F nibs, since I have none of either.

I have a good dozen Centennials that I have accumulated over the years. I have heard some complaints about the material being fragile, but I have never had any problems with any of mine. Two of my tassies also fell off. I glued one back in place. The other just vanished.

As for the pen being an LE, I think the Centennials Mosaics were limited production runs rather than true LE's. I also think the price was kind of stiff, but I have found the prices of the Mosaics to be generally high. For that reason I have not bought one myself. But the main thing is whether you are enjoying the pen.

They are nice pens - I have 16 of them (incl. BP, which I find I like the retro styling of).

I will keep an eye on the metal cap 'jewels' on mine - haven't had one try to escape yet.

I almost did the same thing you did and swapped out a special nib (in that case a pinstripe model) before I realized that it was different from the regular Centennials. I sent it off to Richard Binder to be customized - that might be an option for you next time. His nibs will never be scratchy like yours. I had one customized to an XXF and it still isn't scratchy!

Too bad about the price! That is more than twice what I paid for a green mosaic, from ebay seller lewertowski in France. I commend him to you as being very reliable and closer to you than most sellers.

I have a Parker TRUE BLUE which I plan to review here on The FPN so I don't want to go into too much detail. Just a quick question: what is the Tassie? I just want to know, so I can keep an eye out, to make sure mine doesn't come loose, pop off, and fall into oblivion.

Thanks-

I agree with your review. I have a blue mosaic and appreciate its quality durability. The price was indeed high, yet I found one used in great condition. I didn't know that factory italic nibs were available, however . . . that would be perfect!

Sorry for your difficulties, but it is still a beautiful pen. I have several Duofolds, but they are in my collection as pens that I have not inked. There are several more that I am looking to add to my pen case.

I appreciate the depth of your review.

Thank you.

Great pen Rogerico. I know you have since added a KoP to your collection and from that review, the KoP seems to rule supreme! Duofolds are great pens and I love the colour of this model. I have a Green Check Centennial and am hoping to add a True Blue (modern) to my collection shortly.

Nice review and good photo's - thanks.

Thanks, Lewis. I think one day I'll buy a fine nib for this pen. I'm sure it will be less scratchy than the EF It has now. For now is the only problem with this pen, that I find lovely, well balanced and ready to write. Actually, I love all Duofolds, including the Check ones, True Blue, etc.

@bhavini If I were you I would not buy a dip-pen. They don't replicate the flow characteristics of fountain pens, and they will work well with some inks that will clog fountain pens. Instead of a dip-pen, I would buy a relatively-inexpensive pen that is easy to clean. E.g. a Parker Frontier and a converter for it. Its nib/feed-unit can be unscrewed from the pen, so cleaning it is very very easy.
    • finzi 18 Apr 21:44
@bhavini I ordered a Sailor Hocoro today, to use for testing. I’ll let you know what it’s like. You can get different nib sizes for it, so maybe more versatile than a glass dip pen.

@bhavini, I really like the Sailor Hocoro dip pen. It’s inexpensive, easy to clean, and if you get one with a nib that has a feed, you can get quite a few lines of writing before you have to dip again. I have a fude nib, which I use for swatching and line variation while writing.

What's a relatively cheap tool for a newbie to use to try out new inks, without inking up a pen? I've a bunch of ink samples on their way but I just want to play around with them before I decide on which ones I want to buy more of for writing. I've never used anything except a fountain pen to write with ink before.

It's gonna end where 1929 left us: a world war, shambles, and 'growth by rebuilding'. That's the conservative view of cycling history --and the big plan. Even if our generations perish.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:49
Of course trade wars are much, more important than the prices of consumer products. The true intention is to weaken the dollar, so that the Chinese start selling their US held debt. But the dollar being the defacto world reserve currency, it doesn't lose value that easily. So the idea is to target trade through artificially raising prices. Problem is, inflation will skyrocket. Good luck with that.

In Europe, the only (truly) American produced brand is Esterbrook AFAIK. Tariffs will make Esterbrook products compete on the same level as some high-end European brands (let's say Aurora), while clearly the product is manufactured to compete on a much lower price level.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:24
So let's say you want to buy a Montblanc or whatever. You pay the current tariff on top of the usual price, unless your local distributor is willing to absorb (some) of the difference
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:20
Tariffs are paid by the importer, not the exporter.
    • TheQuillDeal 10 Apr 2:44
Can anyone explain how the tariff war will affect fountain pen prices??

Cappuccino should work. Frothy milk also helps to lubricate the nib. But it has to be made by a barista.

No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍
    • Mercian 22 Oct 22:28
@FineFinerFinest: sometimes nib-'singing' can be lessened - or even cured - by changing the ink that one is putting through the pen, or the paper that one is using. N.b. *sometimes*. Good luck

I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎

@Seney724. The pen was recently disassembled and cleaned, but the nib and feed were not properly inserted into the holder. I'm in Maryland.
    • Diablo 26 Aug 21:32
@Seney724. The nib section needs to be adjusted properly.

Hello, could someone recommend a reliable venue: on line or brick and mortar in Fairfax, VA or Long Island, NY to purchase the soft parts and a converter to restore my dad's Sheaffer Legacy? please. Thanks a mill.

Hello! Is there a thread anywhere 'round here where one can post self-composed poetry? If not, would it be alright if I made one? I searched on google, but to no avail...

I have several Parker Roller Ball & Fiber Tip refills in the original packaging. Where and how do I sell them? The couple that I've opened the ink still flowed when put to paper. Also if a pen would take the foller ball refill then it should take the fiber tip as well? Anyway it's been awhile and I'm want to take my message collection beyond the few pieces that I have... Meaning I don't have a Parker these refills will fit in 🙄

Recently was lucky enough to buy a pristine example of the CF crocodile ball with the gold plating. Then of course I faced the same problem we all have over the years ,of trying to find e refill. Fortunately I discovered one here in the U.K. I wonder if there are other sources which exist in other countries, by the way they were not cheap pen
