Sealing Wax Seals

Sam, that is a beautiful ship.

Either a round or an oval seal would work well for her. A round with something skyward and some clear waves/wake like Edgar Allan Bo's would be wonderful, but your ship will be smaller in contrast.

An oval will allow the ship in her full glory, with less attention to wake or skyline.

Letter Seals might be ok, though for myself I think I'd lean more to Nostalgic Impressions.

If you have a real deep connection to the ship and you want to remember her always in the best possible way, then certainly get a stamp from your maker of choice, but then save up for a Dexter. I have many seals, but my favorites are my custom Dexter seals and I have never regretted the prices I paid for them. I'm having to save again myself, as there are still three seals left in my personal series. Even if I don't complete the series due to costs or circumstances, my dream of my personal coat of arms is a reality and used quite often, and I still marvel over the stamp and its impeccable detail.

Seeing your recommendations, I sent copies to Dexter to ask them how they would recommend it being done. I'll keep you posted.

With the new FPN rules, now I REALLY don't know what to put in my signature.

Just gave a deposit to Dexters. Kate is a really lovely and helpful person to speak with...just as you said. She recommended the 25mm size (about the size of a quarter coin) for practical use with the amount of wax needed, and said they can put the same level of detail as they would on the 35mm size. So I went with 25mm size, and now cannot wait.

Now I am wondering if I could get a seal made from this photograph which is more detailed than it needs to be, but the Eagle is stationed in my city at the Coast Guard Academy

Ah, the barque EAGLE. Spent many fine days on her. When she isn't underway, her pier is the best place to watch the 4th of July fireworks from (State Pier being a close second). Have you ever tried turning over some of the wooden placards onboard to see their original German inscriptions?

Yeah, it's got quite a rich history, and a tribute to German shipbuilding. One of the most beautiful tall ships.

That's the post I have been trying to find. Thanks Kiavonne. This is my favorite seal I have seen.

I know Dexter is the best, but I wonder how a rectangular 1" x 1.25" stamp would look. I saw this other place that makes custom seals from photos here: http://www.letterseals.com/custom-wax-seals.html which might be worth a try?

Congratulations Sam.

The Barque Eagle celebrates her 75th year underway this year.

During the annual Summer Cruise to train Coast Guard Academy Cadets, the Barque Eagle used to publish a daily blog of life aboard and ports of call. I can't seem to find the blog for Summer 2011 - may have been a casualty of heightened security. But Eagle maintains a Facebook page - http://www.facebook.com/CoastGuardCutterEagle?sk=photos

I am looking forward to the seal! I love the USCG mission!

There are a couple ebay dealers who do tall ship stamps: rotasatoropera (I think that was the source of the pic in your post) and parpile02

Returned to using wax seal for Christmas cards and letters using 1/2" diameter seals. But recently purchased a 1" custom made seal. With the larger seal I try to melt enough wax to make the impression, but by the time I do the wax has started to solidify and the impression does not turn out well. What is the trick to making a 1" wax seal? What do you apply to the seal to make it easy to separate? I read some use cooking oil, others quench it in iced water before making the impression, any advice, suggestions and tips on how to make a good wax seal impression would be appreciated.

Best Regards,

Mikale

I'm not an expert, but I think some of it is the quality of the wax, using sticks without wicks lets you use a hotter culinary torch (like for creme brulee deserts) which can yield a large puddle very quickly, and still leave the necessary time for spreading out the pool with the stick. Most metal seals do fine with a quick breathing on the end. If you press it on a sponge and leave water droplets on the metal, those get put into the seal. Some place them on an ice cube, but you need to shake or blow off any water droplets you see.

There is a whole set of very useful tips at my favorite wax: brand AtelierGargoyle.com here.

I use a variety of wax seals ... mostly from J'Herbin (simple initials and hearts) to a custom initial seal from customwaxnseals

AtelierGargoyle make the best wax on the market. Period. It has just the right viscosity and the diameter is just right for stirring the wax seal.

I'm a little overkill with melting my wax seals and use a $160 ST Dupont maxijet, table-top sized cigar lighter. The lighter is just the right size to hold, not too close to the seal and burns with a very, very reliable butane flame. After all, ST Dupont do make some (if not) the best lighters in the world. The trick is to melt the end of the stick evenly, drip a circle of wax the right size and then stir with the hot end of the stick, so that the blob of wax is even in temperature and distribution (a few stirs, or else it hardens). Experience teaches you when best to stamp it!

In Rotation: MB 146 (EF), Noodler's Ahab bumblebee, Edison Pearl (F), Sailor ProGear (N-MF)

In storage: MB 149 (18k EF), TWSBI 540 (B), ST Dupont Olympio XL (EF), MB Dumas (B stub), Waterman Preface (ST), Edison Pearl (0.5mm CI), Noodler's Ahab clear, Pilot VP (M), Danitrio Densho (F), Aurora Optima (F), Lamy 2000 (F), Visconti Homo Sapiens (stub)

These are the seals I'm using for my Christmas cards this year.

The crest was a custom seal from waxseals.com.

The monogram is a seal I bought in North Vancouver about 12 years ago.

Been a while since my order, but good things come to those who wait. This is my 1st & then 2nd proof which I just gave authorization to finalize:

I'm very interested in seeing the final result. A good friend of mine was in the Coast Guard and I remember him talking about the time he was on the Eagle.

Thats Great! I've been thinking of doing something similar, but have not found an engraver. Did you do the engraving yourself? Attach the plate yourself?

Love this. Did you design the stamp? Would love to see what you could come up with for my initials. Love the handle, very nice.

Yes, the design of the engravings is done by me. M and B are complex letters and with this font I found no other nice combination.
