What Color Are Your Fingers Today?

GouletPens

Recommended Posts

I've got a mixture of J. Herbin Emerald of Chivor and Diamine Schubert on all but my pinky of my left hand. I cleaned out five pens today, but it seems these teals are the worst culprits. I've washed my hands countless times, but there is still a blue tinge. I'm not mad, although I'm hoping they'll fully disappear in tonights shower.

Earlier today it was a small amount of diluted KWZI Chicago Blue, trying to get the pen it's in (Midnight Blue Parker 51, M or F/M nib) started so I could finish my morning journal entry.

It came out when I washed my hair.

@ loudotmac -- you might want to look into a hand cleaner that has something like pumice in it. Sadly InkNix is no longer on the market, but Indy Pen Dance has an equivalent for sale (I have a jar but haven't tried it yet). No affiliation with Indy Pen Dance other than as a happy customer who has had Mike and/or Linda work on pens for me at shows.

Some people use stuff like the heavy duty Gojo cleanser (not the regular stuff -- the kind used by car mechanics). I don't know what the equivalent in the UK would be.

My fingertips are covered in Diamine Jalur Gemilang. I wrote my shopping list with it (I hate shopping and the ink makes me happy) but managed to hold the list with wet fingers. Now I have text samples all over my fingertips.

Last night it was Noodler's Bad Blue Heron from cleaning out a Pelikan M200. And for loudofmac and inkstainedruth — Lava hand soap takes out most inks, it's pumice-based.

I've wondered about Lava soap -- my dad used to use it whenever he was doing stuff like changing the oil in the car or doing yard work. (I've also wondered about "professional strength" Gojo -- not the stuff in truck stop restrooms, but the heavy duty stuff they sell in the "repairs" sections of the truck stop stores, because I think it's also supposed to have pumice in it). Of course I'm still working on the last of my original jar of Ink Nix, and have a jar of the replacement stuff that Indy-Pen-Dance sells, so I don't need to get anything else *quite* yet....

Today (and well, since I haven't gotten to bed yet for various reasons, yesterday) it's been a mix of teal, blue, and blue-black inks -- mostly KWZI Walks Over Vistula, with a little a bit of diluted Sailor Souboku and Noodler's Kung Te Cheng, plus a couple of dots yesterday morning of diluted KWZI Chicago Blue LE while trying to get the pen it's in, the Midnight Blue 51 Aerometric, started (guessing that it's MAYBE finally out of ink...).

This morning, I managed to fill my Pilot Elite 95s with Herbiin's Eclat du Saphir, and I didn't get any on my fingers :( It's almost disappointing, really...

Today its Noodlers Baystate Blue, Manuscript Black, AND Dr. Ph. Martins Bombay Blue (I like blues lol). I descovered the other day that Ronsonol Zippo fluid takes off Killz Origional... As a pro painter i have nightmares about getting a 5gallon bucket of it dumped on me and then trying to remove it LOL... it just DOESNT come off. Ronsonol takes it off like its nothing. So i just did a test and the ronsonol took off the Manuscript black that has been stuck IN my thumbnail for almost 2 weeks from adjusting my XF pilot metropolitan which dug into the nail and left ink IN the nail... So if you're interested Ronsonol gets rid of FP ink as well LOL

Robert Oster "Lake of Fire", from using a syringe to fill converters/ cartridges. I don't understand, I was quite handy with a syringe in my past life when I was a nurse.... but then I wasn't using 5cc syringes to handle less than 1 cc of fluid....

I did three refills with the obligatory cleaning... Everyting went very well, except from closing the last bottle.

Still an evening to think what I'm about to say my colleagues tomorrow. I assume Rohrer & Klingner Alt-Goldgrün will sound like Chinese to them...

For the last week, different shades of burgundy, starting with Monteverde Napa Burgundy and Diamine Burgundy Royale.

I actually want to tame the slight purplish color in the Burgundy Royale so I'm blending it 3:1 with Diamine Ancient Copper, i.e., 3 ml of Burgundy Royale and 1 ml of Ancient Copper. I figure the orange/brown in the Ancient Copper will neutralize the blue in the Burgundy Royale that's pulling it toward purple. It didn't blow the top off the vial and no precipitate formed after 12 hours so I've been test writing with it. It seems to be changing the color the way I wanted it to so I'll probably keep making this blend going forward.

A custom blended ink is a long term probability analysis: your confidence grows as you write with the blended ink more and more, but its use will always be tentative.

Yesterday it was a little Birmingham Truss Blue, while trying to fill a pen. I really should have dumped the stuff in the little sample bottle into a vial, because I was having trouble getting the nib completely submerged. Plus, the sample bottle I got from Birmingham directly (back when they still had the brick and mortar store) has this little plug you have to remove once you unscrew the cap -- and that's where the blue on my hands mostly came from: removing and replacing the plug....

Truss Blue is such a gorgeous color, though....

Levenger Pinkly. Turns out that both the bottle of ink and matching True Writer were covered with a patina of ink and, of course, I got a lot more on my hands while cleaning everything up.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

Lava bar soap works best for me when I use it like a sanding block and absolutely dry. Instead of washing my hands with it, I wash my hands with liquid hand soap to remove as much ink as possible in that manner. Then, if possible, I tamp dry with a paper towel the unstained parts of my hand, but in any case leave moistened (not wringing wet) the place(s) where ink has stained my hands or fingers. Then I sand the stains with the corner of the dry bar. If that corner of the bar gets too wet before I'm done, I move to a different corner.

I love the smell of fountain pen ink in the morning.

Still got a bit of Noodlers Black Swan in English Roses in the cracks in my skin, looking like a livid capillary problem.

Gojo hand scrub with the crushed apricot stones as an abrasive? Not sure if it's exactly the heavy duty stuff you mean, but that's used where I work. It's powerful stuff.

Swarfega would be the best-known home-grown equivalent, probably.
