H. W. T. - Handwriting Without Tears

HWT is ugly and modern day D'Nealian is ugly (as it is not the same

as the original, as Kate has told us).

HWT is a handwriting cult. They except no other idea other than

their method. That is it. They are like drones, denouncing every other

method except for their own messod (not a method, get it?). But it also goes to preference, does it not? I like and prefer cursive, hands down no question. Kate prefers italic hands-down no question. Others prefer cursive and others prefer italic. Does it not just lead to preference?

But there is also custody of the eyes, which the world IS lacking.

What do you mean by "custody of the eyes"?

Beauty. Decent. My way of saying "looking nice". Modesty, nice decent houses. Simplicity, but illustrious simplicity like the loops and curls of Spencerian, but then the beautiful simplicity of Palmer, and Zaner Bloser, and English Roundhand.

The beauty of St. Peters in Rome, but the beautiful simplicity of the English country Victorian-style church. The simplicity but yet beauty of some italic methods.

Well, then, I'll accept with thanks your conferral of that title -- though I think a *real* engineer would disapprove. Do we have any engineers here? (I mean *real* ones, with diplomas.)

Yep! Engineering is a process, not a profession. I know engineers in title who are not, in my view, engineers because they lack process and discipline. And I also know those who are not technically engineers and yet employ good engineering principles. On the other hand, engineering does not necessarily mean quality, especially subjective quality. HWT could be considered an engineered style. It was created with a specific purpose and designed to meet that purpose. Obviously, there needs to be more at play than just engineering.

Straight artistry can sacrifice function in favor of form. Straight engineering can sacrifice form in favor of function. Both need to be in play. A good artist in a master of form. A good engineer is a master of function. Great artists and engineers are masters of both, and are very similar usually only differing in approach.

Wow, this handwriting is really bad. So bad that it makes D'Nealian look good.

D'Nealian isn't that bad really, the only regret I have from being raised in the system is that sometimes when I'm not thinking straight I get little bumps in between letters from the tails.

Yea, something must be wrong with me now, I am seriously thinking D'Nealian is good.

To me, it looks like typical Renaissance Italic -- abbreviations and all -- as used for correspondence by a non-calligrapher trying to make a good impression.
