A comparison photo of green inks

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

as a result of some purchases and many trades, I now have ten different green inks :o :) I would like to share this wealth by posting my first comparison photo, which nicely complements a previous scan. I used an Omas Ogiva with a medium nib, dipped in each ink and accurately rinsed after writing each line.

A few comments on the various inks:

  • De Atramentis Bambusgrün is virtually identical to Diamine Emerald Green (which, incidentally, is much cheaper).
  • Rohrer & Klingner Verdura, J. Herbin Lierre Sauvage, and Private Reserve Sherwood Green are true greens (with no yellow or turquoise tones) of increasing darkness.
  • Yellow tones are evident, instead, in De Atramentis Bambusgrün, Diamine Emerald Green, and Private Reserve Spearmint.
  • Private Reserve DC Supershow Green (2006), Diamine Dark Green, Waterman Green, and Levenger Gemstone Green have increasingly more intense turquoise tones; as such, they are difficult to be correctly rendered on computer monitors and are a bit darker in reality.

Bye.

Excellent! Thanks for sharing.

Wow, fantastic, thanks for this Luca! It's wonderful to have so many close colors together, in a true apples-to-apples comparison.

Isn't sanity really a one-trick pony, anyway? I mean, all you get is one trick, rational thinking! But when you're good and crazy . . . ooh hoo hoo hoo! . . . the sky's the limit!

Thanks for the comparison! I like greens, deep greens, and am looking forward to getting my Sherwood green. Although I like blues, and blue-blacks... and I need a purple... the list goes on. :(

Thanks for the scan. As Sonia said, it's really good to be able to see these different colours alongside each other.

The Diamine Emerald does look like a genuine emerald green on this photo, and very close to the Bambusgrün. My bottle of Diamine Emerald seems to tend more towards the hue of PR Avacado, especially when it has been in the pen for a little while. Is this a variation in the ink, or does it just happen to look nicer in a photo than on paper? :-)

BTW, does anyone know how Lamy Green fits into this sequence? I have it, rather like it (v. nice shading), and would guess it is quite similar to the last four. But I only have one of the comparison colours (Waterman Green) and my bottle is much, much darker - that's probably because it is at least 10 years old, probably actually around 20 years.

I suspect it is a variation in the ink: on my monitor the photo of Diamine Emerald Green is true to the original, and almost identical to De Atramentis Bambusgrün. It is normal, however, for an ink to darken after it has been in a pen for a while, especially if the cap is not airtight; this occurs, for instance, in my Omas Ogiva, whose cap has a pretty large vent beneath the top of the clip.
