Sheaffer Ink In International Cartridges?

Long story short: I want short international cartridges containing Sheaffer Turquoise or Peacock Blue. I can't find them. They have been made. Anybody know anything?

Long story long: back in 2002 when I was a freshmeat in college, I picked up a Sheaffer Reaktor in wal-mart. It was my first fountain pen, and the first cartridge I plopped in during chemistry class was the turquoise cart. I was in love. Unfortunately, I couldn't find that ink in that cartridge. Fast forward a few years; I bought up all the Sheaffer type turquoise carts on clearance from an art store that has since gone out of business. I also gave up and ordered a bottle of the stuff online after all the vintage, cheap, etc. Sheaffers I found leaked like sieves. I tried a No-Nonsense, a School Pen, and a couple vintage models I have yet to identify. Some (the vintage ones) had cracked plastic; the newer ones just leaked for some reason. I switched to a converter, but it often ran out and I lost out on the spare cartridge that my new pen could hold. I clearly couldn't throw a glass inkwell in my backpack. I would dearly love to pick up some more of my favorite ink ever in international form for either convenience sake, air travel, or when I want to toss a couple spares in my bag in case I run dry.

I know that both the Reaktor and Targa Slimline both used international cartridges, and I suspect that Sheaffer is still producing cartridges for them in limited numbers, but not advertising them anywhere. Can anyone help me out?

The Reacktors were packaged with international-type cartridges that I suspect were made by the same folks who now make Sheaffer Skrip ink in Slovenia. I doubt what was in those short cartridges was ever the Skrip ink produced in the USA, and those cartridges were not to my knowledge ever sold under the Sheaffer name separate from the pens.

Hi, the Sheaffer Targa Slimline, the Fashion and the TRZ used the "slim" sheaffer cartridges, these carts are proprietary to sheaffer and only look like the international long carts with one tapering end. The carts have to be pierced at the wider end. Maybe these are the carts that you remember.

Best,

Hari

I don't think it ever could have been real Sheaffer Skrip Peacock Blue in European cartridges. I also doubt Sheaffer produces much of anything anymore, much less ink, even much less slim cartridges. It's been Slovenian ink for years now. I haven't tried or seen the turquoise. I imagine it's not the same, but not bad.

There was another thread where someone linked to the Slovenian manufacturer who probably makes the ink and cartridges. Look at the pictures on that page. You could probably buy generic opaque cartrdiges somewhere and they'd be the same.

I stand corrected on the Targa Slimline. However, the Reaktor most definitely uses short international carts.

Can anyone link to that thread with pictures? I don't really know what I'm looking for here.

If you have a converter and it runs on you, you need more pens, or a small plastic bottle for ink.

Thanks for the links...I'll needing some cartridges...in a Cartridge Sheaffer is coming in. I live in Germany so it should be cheaper, than in the States.

That looks an awful lot like the Sheaffer carts I still have from the Reaktor package. Yellow, orange, pink, purple, turquoise (and maybe black?) were the five (six?), I think.

Re: more pens, I'm trying to keep the number I carry down, but it's what I'd do I suppose.

  • 1 month later...

Unfortunately, Vivapen has flat-rate shipping of fifteen euro per order, on two euro worth of carts. And they don't sell turquoise carts outside of an assortment. :headsmack:

I've emailed them, but it's taking a while. Anyone maybe up for a group buy? Not counting shipping, it's about 2.5 cents per cartridge at their prices.

It's an old thread but I wanted to keep the answers with the question;-)

I bought a Reaktor when it was the current model. Around that time I also got "Sheaffer" international cartridges in many colors including turquoise, black, purple, yellow, pink, and orange. I think the last three of these were Slovenian colors not available in the Made in USA Sheaffer ink line. So I think the ink you liked is Slovenian Turquoise and not USA Peacock Blue. The good news is that that ink is still being made. The bad news is that it comes only in bottles or in the cartridges that fit most other Sheaffer pens. The only "Sheaffer" cartridges now sold under that brand that fit the Reaktor are only available in blue and black. You can find those on eBay.

Returning to the good news, the Reaktor should take short international cartridges, and you can get those in a zillion colors under numerous brand names. Search various fountain pen sites for color swatches of the different turquoise inks to see if you can find a good match. Or if you are not that fussy about the particular shade of turquoise both majus7777 and usaoutletstore on eBay sell turquoise short international cartridges in quantity at very low prices.

I have owned many Made in USA Sheaffer pens over the years and never had one leak. The USA red ink did leak in some pens but that seemed to be an ink problem, not a pen problem. If you are getting lots of leaky Sheaffers you might look to other sources. eBay has lots of sellers who list stuff they picked up at yard and estate sales and about which they know nothing. Often you can detect this by looking at what else they have for sale. Look for someone who regularly sells pens, or writes a description of the pen that indicates they know whether it leaks or not. From time to time you can find the Dollar Pens in still unopened packages. I think those are much better pens than the Reaktor.

Funny, no one has suggested filling cartridges from a bottle of turquoise ink you do like. Works fine, either heat glue or Sticky Tack seals the carts until needed.

Best of luck,

Yours,
Randal

The human dichotomies of trust and distrust, honor and duplicity, love and hate --- all depend on internal states we cannot directly experience. Isn't this what adds zest to our life?

As far as my experiences, a Sheaffer cartridge, similarities not withstanding, is NOT an International Standard cartridge. It is a Sheaffer cartridge. If you still have some of the empty Sheaffer cartridges, you can refill them with bottle ink of your choice, using a syringe.

And here is a picture of the Reaktor on its original bubble card. Said card shows six ink colors. You can see that three of those were bundled with the pen. I think the other three are hidden beneath these. The colors exactly match what is in my drawer marked "Sheaffer international". I think the middle cartridge is the coveted turquoise. Not present is plain blue. These were made and are still sold on cards like the black ink cartridges in the image I posted above.
