Trademark no. 84,220, the Eagle Pencil Co.'s "Automatic Knives", Nov 21, 1911, used since January 1911, is for a red band on the handle of an automatic knife, or drop jack knife, or gravity penknife for cutting and fine-tuning quills. Also see patent no. 273,222, Claes W. Boman's "Holder For Knife-Blades", Feb 27, 1883, assigned to Joseph Reckendorfer, re-issued on June 5, 1883, RE 10,335, a spring-loaded "drop" holder, or case for a penknife, and patent no. 356,996 for a version as a drop pen case, or penholder. There are also US patent nos. 363,582 and 363,584, and UK patent no. 5,779 in 1883. And these two patents are for two other types of a "Combination Instrument". Patent no. 273,232 from 1883 is for a gravity, or drop penknife and mechanical pencil combo, and patent no. 378,261 from 1888 is for a gravity, or drop penholder and mechanical pencil combo.
