Homemade Ink!

I like you more and more, young art teacher! You are very kind. I agree with you, inks are pretty pricey at 15+ shipping for 3 ounces. I just thought of this, don't sell inks, why don't you compile a recipe book for inks and sell the book? We can buy the book, we can all mix up our own ink, and benefit from your experimentation and what you learn. Seriously, does anyone know of a recipe book for homemade inks?

Seems like I saw one a while back, but I'm not certain. Need to do some searching online.

I've used natural veggie juice ... art work again, not in FPs. Used common ones like beet, carrot and such.

Ooooo, I bet beet juice would be a beautiful red/purple magenta on paper or fade to a brilliant pink. The colors are all there in nature and natural substances.

beet juice? i bet that stains more than BSB!!!

Watch_art, There's a thread going on here, "Lover's of Green Unite" This color you have created is a very distinctive green, I like it a lot, very earthy, natural looking does not look muddy or like an army jeep. It is kind of a pistachio or olive color. Please duplicate your post in the "Lovers of Green Unite" thread, so all the green ink lovers are sure to see it. Do you have a recipe perfected? Could you recreate this color or was it just beginner's luck? I really do admire your creativity and your experimentation is yielding some nice hues. How is the flow?

:roflmho:

but so far it's behaved WONDERFULLY. i hope i can make more batches that closely match this one.

my next batch will be in a cleaned out peanut butter jar. smuckers to be exact. why? b/c that's the best p/b there is,

of course.

If you make and keep several colors, you might want to consider getting those small canning jars, the size for jams or jellies.

Agree with you on Smucker's Peanut Butter being the best pb. Best treat ever is Smucker's peanut butter between graham crackers. Nutritious too, Yum! in moderation a totally guilt-free pleasure.

Too much soap you say? But that's nothing compared to what happened to my pilot/namiki black when I added soap to it to try to get it to flow in one of my pens. 0_o I've found what works good for me is, when your pen runs out of ink and you're rinsing it in preparation for filling it again, flush it with soapy water, then again with regular water, and the trace remnants of soap in the pen will be enough to get your dry inks flowing. Question about your ink:How does your mixture hold up against water?

it washes right away. not waterproof at all. held under the sink for about 20 seconds.

Ah, I see, thank you. It's not as bad as I would have thought though. Comparable to the resistance of the ink that came with my green platinum preppy.

I posted some pages from a home chemistry set book a while back that had lots of ink recipes. If you are interested, I can find the scans and post them again (or, anyone interested can PM me and I'll email the pages or the links).

Really good job on the homemade ink. I think I might just have to try this myself!

Need a pen repaired or a nib re-ground? I'd love to help you out.

Food coloring dyes are "organic" only in the chemical sense of the word. The closest these compounds have been to something alive was when the dinosaur died...

But they are recognized as non-toxic, mainly because they are poorly absorbed in the digestive tract.

You can also use them to dye wool- or your hair.

Sometimes the cat needs a new cat toy. And sometimes I need a new pen.

Okay, here are the three pages. If anyone has trouble reading, just drop me an email and I'll send the pages as attachments. I think it was a Gilbert Home Chemistry booklet from the 1950s, btw.
