I found this unused Sheaffer desk set with the brass name plate affixed crooked! :headsmack: No wonder the owner never used it.

What are the best choices for removing/getting the plate removed without damaging the base?

Thanks.

If you can secure the base very tightly. Use a piece of thin wire to slide it under the brass plate. It should remove the plate.

Acetone, "goof -off" or something like that should remove the remaining glue residue.

I had a very similar Parker desk set with an engraved brass nameplate. I wanted to remove the nameplate and attach another. Not knowing what to do I just did nothing. After about six months it just came loose by itself. If you have the time try this method. I've tried doing nothing on lots of things that need to be done. Sometimes it works. I am a great procrastinator.

A very thin but strong wire or a craft knife blade. You can polish out minor scratches later, just don't make any deep ones.

Use a hair dryer to hit the nameplate directly until hot. It will come right off and no chance of scratching the marble.

Terrific, helpful suggestions all. I'll let you know how the hairdryer with thin wire works. Barring that, I'll try the procrastination technique. Thank you.

Instead of thin wire which could scratch things, try thin mono filament fishing line which won't.

If you dont have fishing string then dental floss will work well.

Heat gun/hair dryer. Warm it up and it should slide off, then just clean off any glue residue.

Heat and very thin guitar string worked great. Plate came right off. I would have used thin fishing line or dental floss if I'd read those suggestions before I tried the guitar string.
