Minimalist Handsome Pen Cabinet

Recommended Posts

This is another review of Geoff Morris' pen cases which have also been eloquently described by stevlight and talkinghead in http://www.fountainp...-case-cabinet/.

I'd been looking for a while for a simple, minimalist pen case to house some pens. I didn't want any fancy metal clasps or hinges, or a glass display top – just a decent case to store pens.

Geoff's standard case are either 5-drawer or 2-drawer models, and they come in either standard or deep sizes. I chose the 5- drawer, deep version and that's what's illustrated in the accompanying images. The measurements are 185 mm deep by 275 mm high and 250 mm wide.

You can also choose the color of the felt with which you would like Geoff to line the drawers; there are the standard black, brown, green, red etc as well as more vibrant colors like yellow, orange and pink etc. He can make each drawer a separate color or each drawer the same color. I chose the yellow, and am really happy with it. I think it makes the pens sparkle more than they would with a darker color.

The drawers hold 10 pens each and easily accommodate a 149, as shown. The drawers slide out completely, a nice feature, which allows one to take a drawer to another location. The cases are not made out of solid wood, but out of MDF, which is a stable substance that doesn't warp or split, an advantage in homes that have varying temperatures. A nice touch is that the same felt used to line the drawers is used on the bottom of the case, to protect furniture underneath the case.

Geoff offers superb service. He makes the cases when you place an order and in my case, the entire process was completed in about a week. He keeps the customer up to date about the progress and when the case is finished, Geoff will email pictures of the final product for your final approval, before asking you to pay for them. Once paid for, the cases are packed very well and then shipped, tracked and insured. Geoff's website: http://www.pencase.co.uk/.

Ooh, I like that. Not particularly expensive either, I see.

Looks absolutely wonderful, and from the UK too.

I get very envious when I see the things that are available to the in the USA, so it is nice to get even!

Just beautiful!!! Love the simplicity of the design. You're right, the yellow felt really sets off the pens to advantage. <sigh> Wish I could afford such a splendid piece of craftmanship. (price is great, it's the shipping that's too much for me) <even bigger sigh> Once again I wish I lived in the UK!

Thanks for the tip on yellow felt.

Sooner or later, I have to order some slotted felt inserts for my two cigar humidors that I bought to hold pens.

Ransom Bucket cost me many of my pictures taken by a poor camera that was finally tossed. Luckily, the Chicken Scratch pictures also vanished.

I add some more pics for your delectation!

I have been trawling around looking for a storage solution that was small and functional without breaking the bank. I went to Geoff's website and looked at his design. Very nice but only in mahogany finish. This stopped me in my tracks for a while as I really didn't want to add another colour of wood into my office - lovely maple floor with a feature wall of larch. So I thought I would ask Geoff anyway to see if I could get it in black. Geoff then spent a few days experimenting with paint and wax finishes till he finally decided that this was possible and he could make me one that he would be happy with!

I went for purple felt interior and it looked the business. Unfortunately the case had been kicked around like a football by the courier and arrived damaged. This was the first one that Geoff has had to replace - his packaging is excellent (give yourself 15 mins to unpack it!) and it really must have been dropped onto a corner to create the damage. It's at times like this when you find out what a vendor is really like - hopefully not just willing to take your money etc. Geoff responded above and beyond the call of duty. He replaced the cabinet within the week for a new one, this time with yellow interior, and has left the other case with me while sorting out the refund for himself. Top man, great communicator - do not hesitate to do business with this guy!

Anyway - here's some pictures. The drawers can fit ten pens but I think I prefer to have five. TBH if I start putting ten in each drawer I will have to buy more pens... :headsmack: The empty drawers (just felt lined) are great too for holding other related accessories.

Nice pen cabinet ... simple and attractive. I've been looking for a price list (not shipping) on the website, but I can't find one. Do you email to request prices?

The other site mentioned, gopens.com, has nice glass top boxes that seem reasonably priced, but not sure I want to deal with boxes. I wonder how durable the plastic slotted trays are.

Although rather new to FPN and not really in need of storage options "today", I didn't heed the warning I read my first day here <LOL> and now am severely infected with the FP (as well as ink) virus. So it's a fact that I will need one very soon ... maybe tomorrow. LOL

The prices of Geoff's cabinets are on the face of his website: 5 drawer cabinets - £59 Standard Drawers; £65 Deeper Drawer

I would like to add my endorsement - I have a 7 drawer that I ordered and I love it - so much so that I ordered a 2 drawer also.

Here is a photo of the 7 drawer: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dcGUM5wwl2A/TBP_7WeZW4I/AAAAAAAABb0/zEEOFSBKAao/s320/IMG_3132.jpg

And here is a link to my review of this cabinet: Pen Cabinet Extraordinaire

They are really very reasonably priced, even with shipping. At today's conversion the 5 drawer, large runs about $152.

I received an email from Geoff this afternoon, responding to my inquiry. He says that a 10 drawer cases will be the next offered and that the 2 drawer is going to be phased out.

  • 2 weeks later...

I did it ... ordered a pen case from Geoff. Mine is a 5 drawer, with the 5th or bottom drawer empty, but felt lined. He did the empty drawer for me, because of my glass pen. Only have one now, but would like to have more later.

My pen case arrived today and I couldn't be happier with it. It's lovely and just the right size for me right now. Geoff does a nice job making these cases. He was quick and shipping was faster than if it had come from NC! I've attached a picture of it.

I'm a VERY pleased customer!!
