Heating it that way would result in actually heating the whole pen through heat transfer, and slowly.

 

That's not a good idea. Only heat the area you Need to heat.

 

Heating the whole pen could "banana" it or have the lever retaining ring try and push it's way out from the inside.

 

I prefer to get Just the area I need heated, to the required temperature as fast as possible and for the shortest period of time.
