This was already discussed here and here and here.

I spent all of April in Vienna (wonderful) and payed a visit to Leo Grahofer's shop WFW: vintage pens only, but highly recommended. I picked up a Tempo button filler (local production from the 1930s) with a really good semi-flex stub there.

Enjoy your trip!

Does anyone know of any good places to buy pens in Vienna?

Thanks in advance

If you are looking into current production pens; Weidler, Im Graben 26 is located right in the heart of the downtown pedestrian area.

The location is close enough for a leisurely stroll when visiting major Vienna tourist attractions like Hofburg, Hofreitschule or Stephansdom.

Weidler can also prepare a VAT refund for your purchase if you reside outside of Europe.

Almost opposite Weidler, you will also find a Montblanc boutique, if this brand tickles your fancy.

Wandering around this area, I also found several smaller shops that carry some of the more popular brands.

I searched, and there appears to be one boutique which has a selection of vintage fountain pens, and owners who really like them. They have a nice web site, in German an English. On their website they indicate they are the only shop Austria which specializes in vintage Fountain Pens. I suggest you pull up grasshopper.at and take a look.

I am going to be in Vienna for 10 days in June. I found this post and the follow-ups very useful.

How about the mixed review on Grasshopper? Is the son as bad as he sounds? I am very interested in the WienerWerkstatte and Secessionist styles in the arts, architecture, and design. I also hope to find some Geha pens and Pelikan inkwells at flea markets. Or is this wishful thinking?

I came across a pen shop near Hofburg when I was there; it was at night so I didn't have a chance to go inside but since it was in the middle of tourist attractions it may not have what you're looking for. Now that I google the addresses mentioned here, it may be Weidler. I'm attaching two photos; the price tags in these pictures show how much the prices has gone up in the last 7 years :P

Thank you, Count Von Eisenstein,

The photos of the shop windows certainly show a pleasant jumble of pens and ephemera! I shall try to track it down!

The best pen shop in Vienna, Austria is in my opinion: MAYR & FESSLER

It is perfectly located in the heart of Vienna at Kaernter Strasse (between opera house and St. Stephans cathredral).

They offer the most famous brands like Montblanc, St. Dupont, Graf von Faber Castell, Caran d'Ache, Pelikan, Porsche Design, Parker and Waterman, Cross, Lamy, ...but also interesting and rather rare brands as Montegrappa, Visconti, Kaweco, Hugo Boss, Waldmann, Shaeffer.

I have always been attended by a very friendly and competent staff. (mostly by the owner himself !)

As it is a family run business since 1840 (!) the shop is very classical and real "Viennese" !

The staff is fluent in various different languages as (i have personally witnessed!) English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Russian,... (one of the employees even speaks Mandarin-chinese and contonese !)

I can strongly recommend this shop !!!

Another pen shop called WEIDLER (at Graben) is also prominently located but the staff is by far not as friendly and the variety of brands not nearly as good !

In fact they are rather rude to foreign customers ! Didn't feel well attended !

Whenever I am in Vienna I pay a visit to MAYR & FESSLER and treat myself with a pen. I am a collector and I travel around the world - so I compare prices everywhere I go. I can thruthfully say that this company has very fair prices and a great selection which is why I keep coming back here !

They carry all the major brands and also some rather rare brands.

If you visit you will come across some "old friends" ! :)
This is a fabulous pen store !!!

I was out on a business trip to Vienna recently. I had a few hours spare time in the mid day so I looked this thread up and took a walk (under a very hot early summer sun). Could not go to Mayr & Fessler, but Weidler is still there, Im Graben 26, downtown.

If you have a walk downtown along this pedestrian main street you cannnot miss it, it is just before the end of the street on the side of St Peter's church and before the bend in the pedestrian area where the huge Chanel and Luis Vitton butiques shine their gold into your eyes...

The shop is nice, not too big, but full of pens.

The lady serving is very charming and very competent. I asked her to see a Montegrappa, since she had some of the top shelf showing through the glass.

I did not need to even ask, she uncapped the pen put it in my hand, and offered an ink well to dip it.
The pen was a Montegrappa Miya Argento red celluloid, M gold nib. Nice writing, but I confessed I have this pen already (exactly in red, otherwise I may have been tempted...). In reality I got into the shop because I saw the Graf Von Faber Castell in the window and wanted to check them out, I had seen them many times on the web, but not had a chance to hold one and check the feel in the hand.

The Intuition platino wood is what I was after. I have the terracotta intuition and really like this pen, despite being a converter system. The lack of threads is fantastic, as I hold my pens fairly far from the nib and my fingers seem always to be on the threads of many other pens...

I was also curious to see the ebano finish, to check just how "black" it is (I was after that subdued ebonite black kind of look) and feel it in the hand, but she had run out...

The black fluted resin version of the Intuition was available, she let me try this too, but although very nice, if feels nothing like the wood version.

She did have the Grenadilla! Again I was offered to try the pen on paper after dipping it in a nice vintage glass inkwell.

The feel of the nib on paper was really smooth, and the feel of the wooden barrel, silky.

I was afraid this wood version would be too lightly coloured but in fact the Grenadilla finish is a nice dark brown.

Lastly out of curiosity I asked if she had the new Pelikan M800 renaissance brown. Of course she did!

I was very pleased to see this too, I was curious to see if the pictures I had seen on the web so far were true to life. They are quite. A very nice looking pen.

However my mind was set, although the renaissance is really a nice resin and the M800 is a piston filler, the wood finish of the Intuition makes it a really special pen. She offered some discount on the street price, and that was it, purchase made.

I appreciated the patience of the shop keeper in letting me try the pens, I felt she was always ahead of me knowing what I was going to ask next, but very discreet and never pushing me, until I had made my decision. A nice shop to spend some time in.

(by the way, check your schedules if you go, as many shops in Germany and Austria, they close at 18:00)

I was on a business trip again in Vienna (Austria) and paid MAYR & FESSLER a visit.

Great shop ! I just love it ! Great selection ! Friendly owner and staff !

I picked up a Pelikan M800 Renaissance fountain pen. This is a brand new model with a beautiful marbled colour-combination of brown and green !

Later I even found a picture on the internet of the great sales person who sold me the pen (see pic!)

Advice: If you should ever go to Vienna (Austria) you should definitely check out MAYR & FESSLER!

I can highly recommend this store !

Located in the city center at Kaerntner Strasse 37 between the Vienna State Opera and St. Stephan´s cathedral.

Just back from Vienna and would agree that Mayr & Fessler have an extensive range of new pens but if your interest is vintage pens it has to be Wiener Fullfeder Werkstatte.

It is easy to overlook their shop as it appears to be a general secondhand vintage shop, mostly clothing with a small display of about ten pens in the window. I walked past without noticing and ignored it for several days. But when I went through the front door there were three display cabinets at the back. He limits the window display to avoid damaging the pens with heat and sunlight.

For me the pens are expensive, but they are of the highest standard, including new old stock, a 1920's coral Swan, unfaded Duofold Streamline Senior plus the expected German and Austrian manufactured pens. In addition he undertakes repairs and manufactures his own pens to your order.

The shop is near the Volks Theater at 29 Lechenfelderstrasse on Tram 46, although it is close enough to walk to, on the left past the 25 Hour Hotel and up the hill. They are open Mon - Friday, 10.00-13.00 and 15.00-19.00.

Having said they were expensive, the pens I saw on the Naschmark were truly extortionate so it is very much what the local market rate is. One stall had a pair of post war Waterman's that they wanted 100 Euro each in unrepaired, very user grade which for very little more could be bought at WFW fully serviced and in good condition. There was also a pen stall there which, to be as charitable as possible, is best avoided.

A bit late to the party, but maybe this is helpful for someone's future research.

These are just the privately owned boutiques and big online shops I know about; there are several dozen more shops in every district that specialise in pens, but barely any of them have online presences (it was hard enough to dig up all of these names). The big chainstores Libro and Müller also have a selection of fountain pens in their paper departments, mostly Lamy Vista/Safari/AL-Star and some very cheap FPs for primary schoolers.

If anyone ever finds their way to Vienna and would like to chat with a fellow penthusiast, just shoot me a PM!

I live in Vienna (Austria) and I am a pen lover.

So naturally I know all the pen shops in Vienna but in my opinion the best pen shop in Vienna, Austria is:

1. MAYR & FESSLER (www.mayr-fessler.at)

Located in the center of Vienna on Kaernter Strasse (between the opera house and St. Stephans cathredral).

They have the biggest selection of pens. They offer: Montblanc, St. Dupont, Graf von Faber Castell, Caran d'Ache, Pelikan, Porsche Design, Parker, Waterman, Faber-Castell, Cross, Lamy, Montegrappa, Visconti,...but also interesting and rather rare brands as Sailor, Pilot, Kaweco, Hugo Boss, Waldmann, Esterbrook, Otto Hutt, Pineider, Diplomat, Rotring, Cerruti and a few more...

Staff is very friendly and competent. (I have always been attended by the owner himself who speaks perfect English !)

It is a family run business since 1840 (!) and the shop is very classical and real "Viennese" !

Apart from a large selection of pens they also offer a variety of inks. Not only Montblanc, Graf von Faber-Castell, Caran 'Ache, Pelikan Edelstein, waterman, Parker or Lamy but also Iroshizuku, Diamine and Herbin.

What I like about this shop is they also offer writing paper and notebooks from Midori, Rhodia and Clairefontaine and even Tomoe River !

As you might have noticed I just love this shop !!! (but I don't hold any stocks! :) )

2. Weidler (www.weidler.at)

Another famous pen store in Vienna on prestigious Graben street.

Calls itself a "pen jewelery store". Therefore nice but also a bit pricy. Not as many pen brands though.

Unfortunately they do not have a very friendly staff. Somehow always very stiff and eager to sell you the most expensive pen as fast as possible or else ignoring you and trying their luck with the next customer.

They offer: Montblanc, St. Dupont, Graf von Faber Castell, Caran d'Ache, Pelikan, Montegrappa, Hugo Boss, Waldmann, Esterbrook, Otto Hutt.

3. König & Ebhard (www.koenig-ebhardt.at)

Located on Wollzeile. ( near the train station Wien Mitte)

Nice (compact) shop. Friendly staff but not quite as well stocked on pens.

Interesting other stuff though.

They offer: Caran d'Ache, Pelikan, Parker, Waterman, Faber-Castell, Kaweco, Waldmann, Diplomat, Ohto, Online, Staedtler

4. Miller (www.schreibkultur.at)

Located on famous Mariahilferstrasse (a little bit outside the city center)

Sleek (renovated) stationery store with a fair selection of pens and inks (DeAtramentis!)

Nice but somehow nothing special.

They offer: Caran d’Ache, Pelikan, Parker, Waterman, Faber Castell, Lamy, Kaweco, Cross, Esterbrook, Aurora, Montegrappa, Sailor, Pilot, Hugo Boss

5. Mastnak (www.mastnak.at)

Located on Neubaugasse (a little bit outside the city center)

Friendly staff when around (limited English!). Not as knowledgeable about pens though.

Good ink selection !

Unfortunately it is very cramped and quite a chaotic shop as the shop offers a lot of different stuff.

They offer: Pelikan, Parker, Waterman, Faber Castell, Lamy, Kaweco, Pilot

I'm just glad MAYR & FESSLER on Kaerntner Strasse is still there !🙂🤩

So at least 1 really good pen store remains in Vienna !
