Hi, rochester21:

So, what happened to your first three Carenes? Why is your fourth Waterman your last? Just curious. By the way, my hometown is Rochester, New York, though there is probably a Rochester in every state in the United States!

Well, the first 3 pens were bought used, to save some money. The first 2 pens had serious issues with the ink flow, no matter how long and hard i flushed them, they wouldn`t write properly. The third wrote alright, to my amazement, but the lacquer had signs of use etc. A carene deluxe was my first serious fountain pen- the build quality(they`re solid) and design were and are superb. Apart from the flow issue, they are heavy pens and if you keep your finger on the corner of the nib, it will get an ink stain in that spot, and i don`t think this should happen.

I had various watermans over the last 4 years(l`etalon, gentleman, le man 200, ici et la, some vintage etc) and i found out that these aren`t exactly the most reliable pens around, or the best designed. I had issues even with pens which i bought while brand new, like the ici et la, which refused to write before i took it apart and spread the tines and other adjustments to it.

Although built very well in general, waterman made some strange choice of materials when it comes to their higher end pens- the le man 200 has a so called rust ring mounted on the section, and the plating on some pens, including the carene deluxe and the gentleman, is predisposed to corrosion if not kept in a dry place.

All-in-all, i had more issues with watermans than i had with all the other pens i had put together- and pretty much all my pens were bought used.

@rochester21:

Thanks for the information. By the way, were you born in the US or the UK. Your English is excellent!

You have probably heard the joke:

"What do you call a person who speaks three languages? Answer: Trilingual.

What do you call a person who speaks two languages? Answer: Bilingual.

What do you call a person who speaks one language? Answer: An American!"

Cheers!

P.S. My newest Waterman, a slim Exception (see picture, above) has a very slight skipping problem. While it is a very smooth writer, I am still tempted to attempt separating the tines just a little bit to address the skipping issue. Again, the skipping is minimal and tends to occur only when I'm writing quickly, but you probably are familiar with the urge to "tweak" a pen's performance, no matter how good it might be! Wish me luck. Don

I have 2 Watermans, both Phileas.

#1 is black, M nib, bought sometime in the early 2000s.

#2 is blue-marble, M nib, bought in 2007.

The black writes far wider than the blue-marble, for some reason, almost like some broads that I've seen, but they are both stamped M.

@Sargetalon: Don't leave us hanging! Why did you sell all your Waterman FPs? (Of course if the reason is too personal to divulge, I'll respect your right to keep silent!) Don

I fell in love with Pelikan's and only have room for 1 mistress in my life.

Makes good practical sense.

Not having fallen under the spell of the Pelikan yet--save for a slightly scarred green-and-black-stripe rollerball, I find it hard to empathize with in your divestiture of all pens Waterman. I can, however, sympathize with you in limiting yourself to "one mistress." Not that I've ever entertained the notion of taking on a mistress, mind you, but men's (and women's) hobbies, like mistresses I imagine, do tend to consume a great deal of our time, energy, and money. If you've found a trusted friend in the Pelikan, more power to you. Cheers!

I have a blue-mable Laureat FP/Rollerball set that was the first fountain pen I ever bought and got me hooked in this hobby. This weekend I purchased two Man 100 Patricians (Green and Coral).

Just purchased a burgundy Waterman CF, f-m 18K nib, w/ a converter and two cartridges at a local 2nd hand store. One cartridge was empty and the other was about 1/5th full. I thought the empty one was open and it was not! So, I "inserted" it into the pen (after I cleaned the pen with lukewarm water numerous times) to open the drain hole. After filling it with water (through a syringe), I now have a very nice working "new" pen. Oh yes, the pen was made in Canada.

It came in an excellent condition, clean Waterman "jewel" box which included a ball point and a clear plastic tube which used to contained the converter and still has a small sheet of blue paper with the instructions in French and English.

The converter needs to be re-sacked or, if I can find another converter at a "reasonable" price, I would probably buy one. (If anyone knows of a source for a "new" converter, please let me know).

Glad to find myself on the Waterman's forum. Now I have someplace to spend my spare (? -LOL) time.

Sid

P.S. Is there anyway to date this pen?

So far, I only have one Waterman: a blue marble Phileas (med nib) that I bought when they first came out. Have used it off and on over the years. Writes like a dream, but I find the barrel a bit slippery and have to be careful not to drop it as I tend to fiddle with pens.

Interesting bit of history: When I purchased the pen, I was disconcerted to find that the decorative whatchamacallit (highly technical term there, yes?) on the band at the bottom of the barrel didn't line up with the nib, so I sent the pen to Parker and they fixed it, or replaced the pen, who knows, no questions asked. Nice service. I was amused today to see an NOS waterman of the same blue marble with the same misaligned doohickey (another highly technical term) on the bay today.
