What Waterman pens do you own?

I found a perfect, unused Lady Agathe at an antique mall for $35. I brought her home and got cartridges, but haven't tried her yet. I'm afraid she's like owning a ballgown, very pretty, but not suited for everyday use.

Hi Deb,

I think that Lady Agathe is a tough old gal, kinda like her brothers, the LeMan 100 and 200. She is more Annie Oakley that prima donna, I'm sure!

Enjoy

I just bought a 52 RHR with an accountant nib, said to be among the finest points ever made, but it's not writing especially fine. Have you ever used this nib?

A strange skinny Waterman with a gold medium nib and a funky corrugated finger rest.

I have a green skinny Waterman as above but I don't know what it's called. Any ideas? I've just bought a Waterman Carene, marine amber, but I'm not allowed to use it until my birthday.

I asked this about a year ago and it's probably a Laureat. Check on Google images. I never knew what it was called at the time but it's about the only pen I've ever knowingly lost at work and I was gutted.

That is till (now I am back on thread!) I bought a green Le Man 200 Rhapsody (NOS) with M nib last year. It will be a gorgeous writer once the skipping is cured in the next week or two.

HTH,

Tom

I have only one Waterman. It is a black Phileas with a medium nib. It was my first fountain pen I bought. When I was in Rome, Italy a few weeks ago, I happened upon a very nice and small pen store that sold mostly new fountain pens, but they had a few vintage restored ones as well. They had a Waterman Ripple in a display cabinet with such a nice flex nib on it! Sadly, as I am still in high school I don't have a lot of money and I think it was 240 Euro :crybaby: The salesman wasn't clear about the price as he was Italian and I couldn't understand him.

Sorry for late answer, I've never used an accountant nib, but in the meantime I've found a Pink nib, that's one of the most finest point I've used.

I have had an accountant nib, it is very fine and very firm. Absolutely horrible little nail of a thing in my opinion.

Currently my Watermans comprise of:

Silver Ray Ink Vue standard (red nib)

94 Steel Quartz set (red nib)

54 mottled hard rubber (rigid fine nib - quite pleasant)

4521/2v (fine semi flex nib)

512v (medium semi flex)

Phileas (fine)

Stephanf3, what are the virtues of Waterman pens? What's the appeal, for you?

At first, I don't collect pens to put them into a showcase. Every pen I buy has to be usable for me (and it will be used).

Regarding Waterman, I like the style. It's elegant but not extravagant. This pens don't shout "Look, I'm expensive", it's rather a whisper. The bigger sizes have a very comfortable grip but are not too heavy. Then there are the colours, oh my <sigh>. The deep black of the Experts, the cloudy green of the Preface, the marble-like green of the Laureat and even the deep violet/black of the rather inexpensive Phileas...

Then there is the price. Waterman pens are not cheap but I have the feeling, that the regular price is value for money (and you can snag an practically unused pen at ebay for a much lower price).

I have several pens of other companies and although there are some very nice models, no company seems to have such a variety of stylish pens. Although I have a very nice Cross Townsend and a beautiful Sheaffer Prelude and a solid Rotring 600 and a classy Pelikan 400, I wouldn't by every pen these companies have to offer but when it comes to Waterman, I like almost all models.

The only thing I'm missing is a real piston. I have some Pelikan pens and I really like the piston filling system. You don't have to take the pen apart and risk dropping it into the ink bottle just for a refill.

And the nibs could be a little thinner. I'm used to take my notes in a tiny writing. Therefore I'm limited to Waterman's fine nibs. When it comes to Pelikan or Sheaffer, I can easily use their medium nibs but a Waterman medium converts my already unreadable handwriting into something even I can't decipher anymore.

With a little luck, I can add another Laureat and an Allure to my collection soon, but what I'm really longing for is a garnet red Carene with a fine nib...

A very illuminating reply - thank you, Stephanf3.

Best of luck with that Carene...

Just the one at the moment for me - an 'ivoire' Charleston with a stub nib. It's a very nice pen, writes very well although it's been seriously usurped in my rotation by my two recent P51 acquisitions!

Only one Waterman, a L'Etalon in black lacquer w/gold; medium nib that I bought new in 95 or 96. Love writing with it, but the clip does not grip tightly, and so it can fall out of my pocket easily - and has several times. For this reason, I've stopped carrying (and unfortunately using) it.
