I like vintage hard-rubber Watermans. The one I use most is a mottled red-black eyedropper #12 circa 1918 that I got from David Nishimura's site. It has a long, fine medium-flex nib. I like the shape of the pen, thin and elegant. I use World War II era Waterman's blue-black ink in it that I buy on eBay. I also have a huge#16 PSF, an early lever-filler with a No. 6 flex nib that is just a beautiful writer. I wish my handwriting were worthy of it. It writes superfine to medium-broad and even a scrawler like me can pretend to some elegance with it. You can draw a thick stroke and tail off to a hairline. It's nothing much to look at, a "user's pen," as they call it, but what a writer. Noodler's black is great with it, if you wait a good while for it to dry. It lays down a dense, wet line.

I also have a Waterman #14 POC eyedropper with a fine medium-flex nib that I fill with my mixture of Noodler's black and brown, trying to mimic the look of the Walker's Copperplate iron-gall ink that I sometimes use with a dip pen. And at the Washington Pen Show this August I bought from Joel Hamilton a wonderful #52 lever-filler with a flexible medium oblique nib. It's new old stock, with the original $2.75 price tag on it, and the nib has a real sharp snap to it on the page.

There's nothing like those old nibs, made in an age when people valued penmanship.

I agree about the old pens. Can you point me toward where I might find come? When I was in 2nd grade at St. Catherine's Academy in Benicia CA we were only allowed to write with fountain pens and I had a Sheaffer with the tube that extended out for filling. Also their ink bottles had a little well inside the top so you wouldn't dip too much of your pen while filling. Alas, I only began re-appreciating FPs in the past ten years and discovered Waterman. Until then I was only using a Montblanc Meisterstuck that I originally bought for the outrageous price of $75. Now I almost always reach for my Charlestons. I don't know a smoother nib anywhere. I have a lot of ground to make up for, but living on SSDI and the love and generosity of my friends, it's really slow going. I visit pen shops the way most people visit art museums: to look, admire, and drool.

Having only branched out from my ancient Montblanc Meisterstuck that I bought in 1978, I discovered Watermans about 5 years ago and I can't get myself to break away. I am getting a Pelikan M400 for my birthday this year, though.

So far I have 3 Hemishpheres: Red, Blue, and Black; 2 Charlestons: Black fine nib, Blue Medium Nib; and a Carene Black, medium nib. If only I had done more pen purchasing and less disco dancing I might not be so far behind. I guess it's all right though, since I use all my pens and almost all of my inks (prefer the PR Midnight Blue, American Blues and Black Cherry. I would indulge in a vintage pen if I had the $ and could narrow down a preference. I'll just have to keep plodding along until I catch up with all you professionals. Part of my "problem" is I only buy pens I want to write with. Aesthetics are important, but a distant second to the fun of a smooth nib.

I have just one C/F with black plastic body and section and gold filled cap. I really like it. It was not easy to feed it at first, but now I found a couple of boxes of the proper cartridges and everything is enjoyable about this pen. :cloud9:

Best regards.

Hi, I'm very new here. In fact, this is my very first post. I guess I should have posted in the intro section first. :embarrassed_smile:

Anyway, so far I own two Preface Watermans.

The first one I got was a cherry red lacquer Preface. I bought it in the late 90's when I was living in Chicago at the Marshall Field's at Watertower Place. I paid $19.99 because it was on clearance!!! Apparently no one wanted cherry red according to the sales clerk. I bought a bottle of black Waterman Ink with it and I fell in love with that pen. I know it's somewhere in my apartment. I used it to get through Grad School and for journal writing.

Then I bought my second one on ebay in the early 00's. It's a brushed burgundy/red lacquer Preface. If I'm remembering correctly, I paid about $40.00 for it. I'm still using this pen today!!!

I just ordered a Phileas that is burgundy/red lacquer and I'm paying only $45.00 for a brand new one. I've read around here that it's a good basic pen.

Somehow I'm attracted to the reds when it comes to these pens. I don't understand why reds aren't so popular. Oh, well, better deals and more pens for me!!! :thumbup:

I just got a very nice Graduate at a fair price on Ebay. 1/3 of new. It writes very smooth. It is my first Waterman, and is a sturdy pen.

I need to buy a converter for it, which will probably cost more than what I paid for it.

It is the only converter/cartridge pen I now own. As a child I of course had cartridge pens.

What converter model would it take?

Ransom Bucket cost me many of my pictures taken by a poor camera that was finally tossed. Luckily, the Chicken Scratch pictures also vanished.

I have:

  • a Hemisphere - shimmery blue medium point currently writing in Waterman blue

and a (brand new today - my Mother's Day gift to me) Perspective champagne fine point writing in P.R. Tangerine Dream.

I'm a new fountain penaholic, but I can already tell Waterman is going to be a major vice.

A Graduate, and I love it.

The voice of this guitar of mine, at the awakening of the morning, wants to sing its joy;

I sing to your volcanoes, to your meadows and flowers, that are like mementos of the greatest of my loves;

If I am to die away from you, may they say I am sleeping, and bring me back home.

I found a perfect, unused Lady Agathe at an antique mall for $35. I brought her home and got cartridges, but haven't tried her yet. I'm afraid she's like owning a ballgown, very pretty, but not suited for everyday use.

Just received my third Waterman, a Phileas with a F nib! I've looked high and low for a fine point and my sister just gave me my Christmas present. She picked it up at Tuesday Morning last November. So no I have an Expert II and two Phileas' or is it Phileai?
