I also love CdA Storm, but it is a bit similar to Poussiere de Lune (though deeper and more intense to my eye).

For non-dusty, deep purple, my vote goes to Diamine Imperial Purple, or Montblanc Violet, which has been renamed Lavender.

PR Ebony Purple with 1ml of Velvet black produced just the right dark purple for me.

+1 MB Violet (guess Lavender Purple is the same color) and I would vote for the Noodlers V-Mail North Africa Violet

I absolutely love the hue and behavior of my MB violet. It is pretty dark, especially in a wet, but fine writer.

I like MB Violet, too. Just be aware that, despite its name, it's actually on the reddish side of purple.

A favorite of mine. . .

It can be toned darker by adding a bit of Noodler's Black, without losing the "bulletproof" properties.

ooooh, me like eet!!!

You people!!!

Now I have just received Herbin Pousierre de Lune, Noodlers La Riene Mauve and Noodlers Burgundy!

I love them all and will be writing with all 3 throughout the day :)

Many thanks

"how about De Atramentis' Aubergine?" - Just checked out the review, and apparently this is similar to MB Violet, so definitely another to add to my list. Anyone know of a UK supplier? [ETA - just located on ebay for £10, free postage - but that's a lot for 1 bottle of ink, so I might have to work up to that one...]

"I am on a similar quest and am looking at purple martin and purple wampum." - also on my list (along with Noodler's Purple) but just in general rather than specifically in my quest for aubergine. I don't think they quite have the depth and richness I'm looking for.

"I think you want Caran d' Ache "Storm."" - You're right, I do want Storm, but again, not for an aubergine; just because it's a very purdy colour. It does look a little warmer than Poussiere de Lune (or Diamine Damson) in the sample you linked to, which is definitely a plus point (for me).

Has anybody tried Rohrer & Klingner's Alt Bordeaux (perhaps in comparison to MB Violet)? I just checked out the reviews, and it has leaped very near to the top of my to-try list.

Tanzanite in any case but how about De Atramentis' Aubergine?

You must have been reading my mind. The De Atrementis Aubergine may be what you're looking for. If you can't find anyone who carries the Aubergine look for their Historical Persons inks, Maximilien Robespierre. Unfortunately I don't have a scanner so I can't post a sample of the ink.

I've found the De Atrementis Aubergine on ebay, and it is very high on my to-try list - definitely looks promising!  Unfortunately, I accidentally bid on a pen this morning, so I will have to wait to see if I win that before determining whether I can afford the ink also...  ;)

  • 1 month later...

Have now tried several of the shades suggested in this thread, and this is how they worked for me:

  • Caran d'Ache Storm definitely did not work for me.  In most pens very dark due to being a very wet ink, but there was little subtlety/shading as a result.  In a dry pen, it is not dark at all, and erring towards pink.
  • Rohrer & Klingner's Alt Bordeaux - this was a very pink burgundy.  Nice, but not what I was looking for, and not a colour I will use.  Diamine Rustic Brown is a better (richer) burgundy for me.
  • MB Violet is a gorgeous colour - not quite what I was looking for,  but very close.
  • De Atramentis Aubergine - definitely the winner!  This is a perfect warm, dark colour that does not rely on heavy ink flow in order to appear dark (ie it is dark even in a dry pen); but despite darkness, still has good shading and is distinctly aubergine rather than purple.

My favorite dark, rich purple inks are:

Waterman Purple (nice and bright)

CdA Storm (darker, with a greyish tint, kind of like . . . storm clouds) :headsmack:

MB Violet (darker than Waterman Purple, but brighter than Storm)

Sailor's new Jentle Purple (can't remember the exact name, but it's the darkest of all the above - could under certain lighting conditions be mistaken for black, yet it's definitely purple).

warm and dark with purplish burgundies shining through

PR tanzanite is very dark, but it's more blue than red.

Wow I was going to use purple ink in my new pen. This is definitely my first puchase.

Have you looked at Asprey purple? It's their signature color and it is a lovely ink - and also rather rare.

There's a review of it in the In Reviews forum.

I'm looking for something that is darker and richer - aubergine (/eggplant) is the best description; nothing vivid, bright or garish, but something warm and dark with purplish burgundies shining through.

You've described Mont Blanc Violet (now Lavender Purple) to a tee. Try to get a sample of that.

You might also like PR Burgundy Mist though it is definitely more burgundy than purple.

thanks for sharing the comparison of different purple inks. i was thinking of getting private reserve's ebony purple but wasn't sure of the result. now that i can see it, i love the blue-ish tone to the purple, although i think noodler's purple wampum is closer to the color of eggplant skin, which what deep dark purple should be. those two will make it in my list of inks-to-get.
