The thing I love about shading is that you know a fountain pen was used. It is something people are not used to seeing.

With the new FPN rules, now I REALLY don't know what to put in my signature.

wow, what a wonderful topic with such a great array of pictures and explanations.

 

In my limited experience i've found Iroshizoku's inks to have a great amount of shading, most of the time its a very desirable effect.

 

Yu yake for example shades from a light orange to a deep almost redish hue. When looked after the text has been layed, it almost mimics fire dancing in your words. Again, very desireble as it gives energy to the words, it brings life to paper, and it leaves marks where strength once was.

 

But i'll agree... desirable or not is on the eye of the beholder.
