A quick study of Luke Fildes' "Houseless and Hungry", a depiction based on Dickens' work. 'twas good practice using Sheaffer Skrip Brown in a FC Masuyama Needlepoint in Fosfor Islander. Next step is a lithograph style study. The paper wasn't the best choice for this style.

26207451346_735e632b60_z.jpgB is for Basilisk by Pira Urosevic, on Flickr

A Basilisk drawn with a vintage dip nib with Platinum Carbon Black ink on Stillman&Birn Zeta paper

........

Darkbulb ~ nice Rocnel 25 ~ good to see you are keeping at that journal

flummoxed ~ like that study a lot. I think browns are always an excellent choice for sketching. Why wasn't that paper a good choice for your sketching? (always curious as I also use a fine (EF actually) tip nib for both drawing and writing)

@Pira: Thanks, I've become a huge fan of the browns for all forms of quick sketches and studies! the EF nib and the paper combination was problematic. I think it would have worked well with brushes or even with charcoal. The paper would constantly get stuck in the nib irrespective of the pressure.

I recently, (about a year ago) started painting, and this was my 3rd painting ever. I thought it might be appropriate to be posting it here.

Ahhh the age old problem. I finally found my paper of choice for drawing with the nibs I like to use for that exact reason.... and become quite twitchy when my stock starts to run low. That and how it handles the issues of feathering and bleedthrough ...neither of which I find acceptable. Drawing with needle point nibs means we are literally digging in to the paper and end up with fiber buildup. Well appointed desks used to have nib wipes on them to deal with this...currently I have a piece of chamois on my desk...but that still doesn't help when you have a mismatch between the pen and paper. :/

stringsandpetals ~ nice subject for your still life :)

Yep, I also have a feeling I might have ruined the nib with this piece and another one, the needlepoint seems to have almost become an EF/F now :-(. I guess I must switch to disposable dip nibs for future work.

I'm really enjoying your work.

I feel a book of some kind is in order . . . :)

This is a very humbling thread as I am not very good at drawing :)

I LIKE it though...so I do it.

My mini-project to get me sketching with the few pens that I have now is to try to do a one-minute-sketch of the razor that I used that day to shave with :D

Ah! I've always been jealous of men's shaving equipment--so gorgeous and refined.

That's really good. I like the wash effect and the shading. I am particularly fond of the reflection of the window panes on the handle of the shaving brush: lovely effect. Nicely done.

Cheers,

David.

I love the atmosphere that comes out of all your drawings, flummoxed. And once again... fantastic.

Thank you.

I just ordered Sheaffer Skip brown. Your drawing, and the nuances, convince me I was right for doing so. Beautiful ink, too.

Just sincere, flummoxed. :)

I still remember every detail of your Srinagar sketch. Loved it!

Humbled, thanks! I did love the place and would love to go spend more time in such a beautiful place.

Tonight's doodle because Domhnall Gleeson keeps popping up in all my favourite movies.

Used a Waterman Forum and Diamine Amber, as well as a waterbrush.

Another quick sketch using Namisu Nova All Black and Sheaffer Skrip Brown. The nib was remarkably good when drawing reverse to reduce width (The black nib is only sold in medium by Namisu).

I had absolutely no problem using a fountain pen in a plane by the way.
