Ok, this is my first sketch in this thread.

Normally I post my pictures all in the "Don´t just tell us about....." thread.

I sketch and draw using many different things, not always ink (pencils, watercolor pencils, coloured pencils, markers, charcoal, sanguine, pastel,.....and combinations of it) depending on my mood.

This evenings quick sketch during the time my wife brought my son to bed.

(Serwex MB flex EMF ..... ESS Registrars Blue-Black)

I love this little guy! I also play around with assorted materials. I didn't even know of that thread. Hope to see more of your works here :)

I would vote for a separate thread. This thread has been going for quite some time and is where, if a person has a sketch or drawing to share they can....no special theme. I think a separate thread would be fine, especially for those who might have a problem coming up with an idea or need some motivation.

It reminds me of a book group where everyone reads the same book, which is fine for some people. While others like the pick their own book or subject. I think changing this to a themed thread would change the nature of things entirely and leaves some people without a place to post drawings and sketches.

Below is one of my most recent sketches.

There was no intent on changing this thread. The reason I floated the idea is that this thread often feels lacking in posts (other than my own) for weeks on end (although that does not include people who come here to graze on the shared artwork). I thought that it would just be 2 or 3 keeners but on further consideration I think it is an excellent idea to have one that is dedicated to the concept. There is nothing stopping people from posting to both threads if they feel so inclined...but for those who want to actively participate in the themed sketching they have single place to go and those who are curious to observe know where to find them.

I like the latest sketch. You have very pleasing, loose line work. :)

Ha. Great minds think alike . . . :)

You don´t know the;

thread? :yikes: :yikes: :yikes:

You missed something.

I think it´s the biggest (counting the several parts because it is splitted when it grows too big) thread on FPN.

For sure it´s the thread with the most pictures on the site (pens, inks, writing, drawings)

Wow. You may be new to drawing but it doesn't come across that way. You have really nice expressive line work.

Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

Thank you Ruth!

--

I love the drawings you shared, they remind me of woodblock prints. What ink do you use for the outlines?

Great attitude by the way. Keep that love of colours and just using them.

As for the drawing challenge (gosh I need to find a better word for that): your vote is for a monthly list (I think monthly because it's easier to keep track of).

--

Thanks Pira, it means a lot that you said my drawing reminded you of woodblock prints. I was inspired by the great master Katsushika Hokusai's line work when I bought a published reproduction of his sketchbooks from 200 years ago. Hokusai's work is legendary and I love the quality of lines he produced. I use a mix of De Atramentis Document inks for my ink lines, to prevent the line from running under watercolour. I sometimes use Platinum Carbon Black and Sepia, as well as Super5's Black. They are all nano-carbon inks for fountain pen use.

I look forward to the start of the weekly themed drawing. :) Although I am a bit scared... I've never done this kind of regular challenges, but that's why I need it!

Snak, your new stuff looks again great........ I missed it in the other thread.

Thanks Ptero, I love your work as always. The ESSRI looks particularly bluish in this photo. Was it taken immediately after you finished the drawing, before the iron gall started to go really dark? Just wondering. I love the robot.

Happy Fountain Pen Day!!

A few of my favourite writing pens drawn with Platinum Carbon Black, Diamine Ancient Copper, Iroshizuku Kiri-same & De Atramentis Plum on Stillman&Birn, paper.

I love your Esterbrooks. Can I ask you, what kind of brush do you use for the ink wash? Do you use a round brush? Natural hair or artificial fibre brush? I did ink wash (as opposed to watercolour) once with Sky High using a white taklon brush and I was shocked how the brush fibre got so stained. I don't know if I want to use my kolinsky sable brushes for ink wash that I want to try in the future.

New discovery...... that which is more difficult than sketching a cylindrical R&K bottle: a Diamine one.

I will learn how to draw these things or expire trying.

Happy Fountain Pen Day! A bit late to the party, but it took me a while to finish it :-)

@ SNAK -- I'm not at all surprised Sky High stained your brushes. I saw what it did to the replacement sac on one of my Parker 51s.... :o

Moral of the story -- I'm now really skeptical about the claims of X ink being "safe" and Y ink being "not safe" for your pens. (With the exception of [regular] India ink, or any ink that might have gum arabic as a component, of course....) Because Sailor is always touted as being one of the "safe" brands....

Yes, I use Rounds for the ink washes. You might consider synthetic tips. I currently use http://www.princetonbrush.com/umbria-series-6200/ I have yet to deal with stained fiber. As for white taklon brushes....oh you are going to stain those with any strongly pigmented medium (I am reminded of a white brush used with red acrylic paint which taught me that I will never voluntarily purchase a white brush again) ... I wouldn't trust a kolinsky near ink.

*head smack*...I was so caught up in searching for information about the pen you used to draw that .... I forgot to comment on your work, which is beautiful. It reminds me of Moebius. Wonderfully light work! :)

This thread has really come alive.

My Fountain Pen Day sketch was of an apartment postbox spotted in Venice with an obviously new tennant, "ZG"

http://www.taskyprianou.com/fpn_venice_postbox_.jpg

Ink (lines) - Noodler's Subway Series Sepia (thank you white_lotus. This sketch will soon be on its way to you as a small token of my appreciation)

Ink (wash) - J Herbin Gris Nuage

Pen - No idea but a wondrously expressive Faber Castell 3 nib

Paper - Cass Art Watercolour 300gsm

Love the colours you've used there Tas.

Thank you. I openly dislike browns that wash red but this excellent reddish brown from Noodlers played so well with the Gris Nuage that it was sadly love at first sight. Sadly because I've no idea where to get hold of some. . . .

A quote from 2014 on FPN " Subway Series Sepia was once an Art Brown exclusive, and when they closed, sale of this ink transferred to Fountain Pen Hospital. You can order it on their site, but on the drop-down menu for Noodler's, it just says "Sepia." (Old Dutch Sepia is a different ink, an original FPH exclusive.) When you put "Sepia" in your cart, under Model # it'll say "NI-SUBWAY SERIES."

...I just tried that and yes it seems to work. You can find your ink here.... http://www.fountainpenhospital.com/index_showcase.asp?bod=manufacturers/manufacturer.asp?MFG=35

GREAT drawing by the way :)

Okay my sketch happy friends...our theme thread is now live for those interested.

You can find it here: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/299660-the-weekly-sketch-themed-drawing-prompts-for-members/?p=3494572

Remember this is just a bit of fun for anyone who needs a little nudge to sketch something.

I am looking forward to it because I need desperately to get out of my head and practice 'sketching'. Hope to see you guys there and if you have any ideas send them along to me and I'll add them to the list.

Ruth, that is so true about inks' "safety" claims. I have also found that even within the same brand, each ink is different in "safety".

Pira, thank you for the explanation of the brushes you use for ink washes. I will take look at the Princeton Umbria brushes and may put some sizes of rounds in my next art supply order online.

Tas, I really like that Sepia ink and how it's bled just perfectly to suggest the oxidised metal. I love your dramatic lines. Which pen/nib did you use for the gorgeous expressive wide lines for the frame of your drawing? It is lovely.
