Merry Christmas to you too, Andrew!

Breathe. Take one step at a time. Don't sweat the small stuff. You're not getting older, you are only moving through time. Be calm and positive.

Thanks! 🤝

Hello in the first day of the new year!

Many years ago, when I was a photographer, I shot a portrait of such an authentic Ukrainian. I like him very much and that’s why I decided to draw him. In his look, hidden such strength, such pride, such power and will that are simply radiates from the picture.

A quick sketch of Castell Cartoixa de Vallparadís, in Terrassa, province of Catalunya, Spain. I had a few hours to walk around this city and found many delightful historical venues - and more mundane, but nevertheless good places to be.

The drawing emerged naturally. I did not measure anything, just let the good'ol' Pilot Custom Heritage 912 with Falcon nib do the work (as in Figure 1). All the mistakes are still mine. For example, the detailed work is not accurate (and likely not good), as I simply couldn't get the elements and the perspective right after I've already committed without measuring (Figure 2). But I am quite happy with the result, which gives me a good memory of this place and time (Figure 3).

Well, I think it's lovely!  So what if the detailing is not "accurate" as you say -- it's not an architectural draftsman piece after all - it's ART!

What's the ink you used?

@OldTravelingShoe

I think it's splendid. You tried to capture the moment, you did.

@Andrew_L

Perfect contributions, as usual. I think most of us wouldn't except less by now. 😉

One of mine I finished today. Took me some months because I never got the time.

It's titled "Fire in the Sky". The rest is up to the interpretation of the beholder. I just painted what I saw in my mind. No plan, no intention here.

And I wanted to test inks on wet paper. It's several J.Herbin 1670 and 1798 inks, which explains the gold and silver metallic sheen, on thick wet watercolor paper. Painted with brushes. Plus normal opaque white for the stars.

Very interesting, Astronymus!  What specific inks did you use?  (I ask because I have a number of the 1670 and 1798 inks, but don't tend to use shimmer inks much.

Let me think...

  • 1670 "Rouge Hematite"
  • 1670 "Bleu Ocean"
  • 1798 "Amethyste De L'Oural"
  • 1798 "Cornaline d'Egypte"
  • 350th Anniversary Ink "Vert Atlantide"

Yes, that should be it. I'm actually not really happy with the sheen. But it was also an experiment. So now I've learned how it behaves.

Which version of Rouge Hematite?  The original version with the big flakes of gold, or the later version with the gold shimmer dust in it?  I have the original version, but don't use it much -- the only pen I feel safe using it in is a cheap Chinese pen with a fuse nib.  Didn't think I'd like the base ink color, but turned out that I did.  I have both the original (non-shimmer) version of Bleu Ocean and the shimmer version (as samples), and a sample of Vert Atlandide (which I've yet to try).   Also have a bottle of Amethyste de L'Oural, but haven't tried it either.

I don't tend to use shimmer inks much, just in general.  But I can see how they'd do well for artwork after you posted your piece.

@inkstainedruth I think I got the old version of Rouge Hematite. The nib creeping one. That's why I stopped using it in fountain pens.

The inks are exquisite for calligraphy. But as I am not a great calligrapher I guess will use them in more abstract, geometric pieces.

I like it. Not relative to the start idea, but it is similar to most of my country eastern part at these days ((

Uhm, that's not what I meant! I meant they are all awesome!

Yes, I figured some could associate it with that. I do too sometimes. Slava Ukraini.
